I made a new set of 18th century stays in one week while also teaching my friend Joy to make her first ever stays! I vlogged our week of amazing sewing fun, and I hope you enjoy this look at creating stays at two levels. This vlog is full of tips and tricks that can help with any type of corset making! I've also digitized the pattern we used for these stays, and you can find it linked below.

Pro tip: if you're hand stitching lacing holes, put on a good British miniseries to make the time go quickly. Once you get into a rhythm, you barely have to think about it and you get quicker, especially with a button stitch.

I'm inspired to finish the binding of my 1730's stay, that I started late 2019.

😍
They both turned out beautifully. And I will say it again: your handsewn eyelets are dauntingly exquisite.

I love finger looping, but once you start you are stuck! I cannot imagine trying to do that much at once!!!

Both of you did a fantastic job with your stays. One of these days I'm going to make some.

You and your friend did beautifully. I love that you showed both approaches. It makes it so much more approachable for newbies. I feel such a urge to try this pattern out.

You both did a beautiful job! Is it possible to explain the thought process for where to put the boning channels? How do you know what purpose each bone serves?

I'm happy that you got to try, and liked, the synthetic baleen. That's what I am planning to use too. So it's good to hear reviews on it. Your friend did a good job too. Thanks for the video.

I was literally talking to my hub last night about if it would be worth me trying to make stays for myself or if i should just buy a pair. I think you gave me the nudge to try it myself :)

Loved the fingerloop/toe system - I've had so much trouble figuring out how to get the bit closest to the end to be tight..

Great job ladies!!

but I got to ask, is there a pattern for the black one that Joy previously started? 😅
I can see myself in one like that

can you explain more the why behind the boning placement? it's really hard to find any directions other than "wherever it bunches on the mockup" or "where we told you, cause i say so"

I think the question really is - can you climb a tree in boots! :)
