Functional Ankle Dorsiflexion

The overhead squat is a common functional movement screening assessment. If the subject does not go deep enough in their squat, you may question if the ankle is limited squat depth due to limited dorsiflexion. However, there are a lot of variables that can influence the performance of the task. In research terms, this test lacks high specificity for ruling in limited ankle dorsiflexion range.

However, an article by Alon Rabin and Zvi Kozol in 2016 suggests following up the OHS with the forward arm squat is a better way of ruling in true limited ankle dorsiflexion range, thus higher specificity. Taking a quick glance at the difference in movement requirements, the shoulder is not having to move through it's full range. We can also appreciate the trunk having more freedom to bend forward.

As the authors concluded, "the overhead squat and forward arm squat may be used as complimenting tests in screening for ankle DF limitation." Be sure to test the overhead squat first! #overheadsquat
