Dorsiflexion and Plantar Flexion of the Foot | Anatomy Body Movement Terms

Dorsiflexion and plantarflexion are special body movements involving the foot and ankle joint.

During dorsiflexion, the angle between the dorsum of the foot and the shin decreases, leaving the toes pointing closer to the head. This movement is used to assess ankle clonus, among other things.

During plantar flexion of the foot, the sole of the foot moves closer to the calf, decreasing the angle between these two surfaces.

Why do we use these multiplied and confusing words of dorsal and plantar flexion when, instead, we should just call the former ankle flexion and the latter ankle extension; dorsal flexion amounts to ankle flexion, while plantar flexion is even worse, an all wrong, topsy-turvy, perverted termed forced in the place of ankle extension. Do you hear a ballet teacher tutoring the class by instructions like "Remember plantar flexion!"? - Nope, she cries out loud "Extend the ankles, gals!"
