2019 RTX Gaming Laptops: Dual Channel vs Single Channel RAM

With new gaming laptops with NVIDIA RTX 2060, RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 shipping (including Max-Q versions), you might have noticed that frame rates and benchmark numbers aren’t as high as you’d hoped. Lisa Gade tells you why, and happily it’s a pretty easy fix to gain some serious performance jumps in games- like 20 fps for some titles. Many 2019 gaming laptops ship with single channel RAM (gaming laptops mostly shipped with dual channel in the past), and that might save you money when you upgrade RAM, but it hurts performance out of the box. It's a single channel vs dual channel RAM comparison in gaming and benchmarks kinda video.

I’ve been saying this for years and showcasing it quite often.

Glad to see big channels like yours come out with this 👍

That frame rate jump in Far Cry is insane. Cheers. I'm gonna chuck another 16GB stick into my GE75. Hopefully it's not too difficult to take the bottom off... seems like a lot of clips!

I can vouch for this video and I swear this simple and often neglected trick is the main reason why new RTX laptop are underperforming. I bought a Asus Strix GL704 RTX2070 with a single channel 16GB RAM and it plays like crap, worst then my previous GTX1070 Alienware. Before I watched this video, I was considering every single solution from thermal repaste, thermal throttling etc. After I watched this video and did some research, they said the differences are neglectable but out of desperation I went to give it a shot anyway. Bought a dual 8GB RAM and installed it. True enough, I’m getting extra 30-40 FPS on Insurgency Sandstorm and extra 20+ FPS on battlefield 1 and 5. Unbelievable. I’m subscribing.

Wow, thanks for bringing this up. I knew there was a difference but I remember a few generations ago, it didn't make a big difference for games. I'm shocked to see up to 30 fps difference. An additional 10 fps can be the difference between good enough and very smooth. 30 is gaming changing.

I did the test i was getting a lot less with single channel with my msi gs75. I was so disappointed with the flipped motherboard, well i found a place who did the job for me and now im running 2x16gb-32gb RAM and it a HUGE differences in some many games like metro exodus i was getting a decent 60-75 in a big load and now with dual im getting around 100-125fps on HIGH settings. Excellent video thank you for the good Info. Running a rtx2070 max q BTW.

Ultra books with soldered RAM (not upgradable) should always ship with dual, but laptops with upgradeable RAM should let the buyers choose what they prefer, as normally buying a pair of modules or one extra module apart for replacing or complementing the one that comes in lower configurations is way cheaper than buying the laptop with full specs.

Thanks! This was a very informative video. I actually uploaded a bunch of gameplay videos of the GL704GW with a RTX 2070 on my youtube channel. I got a lot of comments on my videos about upgrading to dual channel. I have only uploaded one video so far with the upgrade but I can already see the difference. I can't wait to try Farcry 5 out and see the difference.
