Tesla Supplier CATL Launches 1.2-Million-Mile Battery To Last 16 Years

CATL, which has a battery supply deal for Tesla, officially announced that its one-million-mile battery is ready, but watch till the end for a little pleasant surprise.

According to China's National Business Daily, the country's biggest battery producer, Contemporary Amperex Technology yesterday announced the launch of its new product which is said to be able to last 16 years and power a vehicle for 2 million kilometers (around 1.24 million miles).

If you remember, over the weekend, CATL Chairman Zeng Yuqun reportedly hinted at an imminent launch.

As Torque News reported a few days ago CATL hasn't revealed who it intends to supply. But rumors emerged that CATL's new battery will be produced for Tesla only, which was denied later by the Chinese battery maker saying that it is ready to produce if someone places an order, according to media outlet Securities Times.

According to Reuters, CATL has signed a 2-year deal with Tesla, said an announcement this February. It's noteworthy that Tesla now is the most-valuable carmaker in the world with a market cap of over 190 billion U.S. dollars after its stock topped above 1,000 U.S. dollars on Wednesday.

Now, it's up to Tesla to decide the volume of battery purchases between July 2020 and June 2022, as per its own requirements. According to China EV market specialist Victoria Li at Smartkarma, Tesla's orders might increase CATL's net profits by no more than 25 percent in 2020.

I'd like to get full specifications for that battery before getting too exited. These batteris are lifepo4 chemistry and they have lasted 8000 cycles for long time. This battery is revolutionary only if price and energy density is competitive.

We have heard rumors that price would be good, which means this battery is fine for low range models. Iy us difficult to get competitive power densities in lifepo4 but some savings can be gained in battery pack level.

Armen, it was great to hear your daughter's contribution. I am however still not convinced that CATL's million mile battery is Tesla's MM battery. I think that CATL is capitalizing on Tesla's buzz of a million mile battery, in the same way that GM/LG also said that they are going to build their own MM battery. But the key difference is that Tesla has been planning to make their own battery, using their own patents and technologies, and CATL specifically said that they were ready to build their million mile for anyone who ordered them. If these two million mile batteries were actually the same battery (using Tesla patents) then CATL would have specifically said that they already had pre-orders from Tesla for their MM battery, and frankly there is no way that Tesla would ever just give away their battery patents to their EV competitors who offered them money (whereas CATL will).

All the battery company can do is say how many charge/recharge cycles their battery can do. A distance, like "1.2 Million Miles" depends on the weight, efficiency and battery pack size of the vehicle in which it is used. A battery which could give a Tesla Model 3 a million miles might not do anything near that for, say, an Audi e-Tron.
