This is such an idealized idea of family life in the past! I'm 64 and my memories of those times are not are golden and glowing.

Doing laundry and ironing was bloody hard work. Sorting, washing - no automatics back then, pulling out
the wet washing, putting it through the wringer or spinner, rinsing, wringing, carrying heavy baskets to the line, and hanging out, was heavy labour. The. it all had to be taken down, sprinkled, and rolled before the many hours of ironing.

Bread was made by hand. It had to be very thoroughly kneaded, twice. The kitchen got very hot in summer during baking.

Kerosene lamps need frequent cleaning. Chimneys must be washed daily. Wicks must be trimmed. Mantles should be boiled in vinegar before use.

What I'm seeing in this man's glorification of those days is that all the work he's memorializing was done by women!
