We are in a special moment in the history that we hold comedians to a higher standard than heads of state.

The fact that a comedian is being scrutinized for not telling a story EXACTLY how it happened when there are literal politicians just confidently lying about facts is just absurd to me.

The fact that Clare Malone (the author of the hit piece) insinuated that Hasan owed the FBI agent a "heads up", even though his job was to entrap innocent Muslims without any heads up, is both hilariously ironic and outrageous.

The reporter at The New Yorker should have a deep dive done on her life and career. I’m willing to bet that this isn’t the first time she’s done something like this.

Gotta love how they put more effort into fact checking a comedy show than their own article

In the early 2000s, a reporter came to my high school to interview students about video games. I happily volunteered, looking forward to share the different genres and stories I'd experienced in the medium. Video games were getting a bad rap at the time, so I thought FINALLY I can share how cool and interesting these games can be. How naive I was. To my dismay, i read the article and found the reporter heavily edited my quotes to promote a piece about video game addiction. Sure, the topic is trivial but it taught me a valuable lesson on how some repooters twist truths and stories to fit their message.

Just watched this on the HR article. The Bethany part is insane. The New Yorker reporter should be ashamed of herself. She had the emails and evidence, yet chose to selectively publish what suited her agenda. Wonder if the reporter will ever be held accountable?

Thank you for standing up to slanted journalism! I have always thoroughly enjoyed your show. I never stopped and questioned the details of what you were saying, but I always understood that there was an underlying truth. I, too, want America to grow in love and embrace the diversity that makes us who we are.

You’d think the New Yorker would have better things to do than create fake scandals. The whole thing was ridiculous, no one with half a brain thinks that comedians don’t embellish and exaggerate things for comedic effect or to make a coherent story. We love you, Hassan!

As an Indian woman, this is the flavor of racism we deal with. Nit-picking, gaslighting to have us meeting unfairly high standards, needing to remain very calm as we lay down rational receipts of facts. I am the first woman in my family to leave the Indian community and work/go to school/live primarily around other races, and this has been the experience. Hasan's response feels simultaneously familiar and a masterclass on how to improve my responses the next time it happens with me.

As a lifetime New Yorker reader, I’m horrified that this happened. And as a comedy lover, it never occurred to me that comedy needed to be literal truth. That’s not how storytelling works! Sincerely hope the very-talented Hasan Minhaj’s reputation and career fully recover.

Thank you for being open and honest not only now but throughout your career! You are someone that I really do look up to. Your acceptance of faults and still standing up for yourself at the same time is inspiring! ❤

This is the BEST most fact checked and honest response I've EVER seen to such an article. Thank you for doing this and I'm sorry you had to do it

It’s a comedy special, not a documentary! This level of diligence is way beyond what would be expected. Thanks for the honesty and sincerity and for all your work!

I find it strange they’re fact-checking comedy shows and disturbing that they chose the topic of racism to gaslight. Thank you for sharing this story. I hope you continue to share your experiences and give voice to important topics.

This is one of the first times I've seen an apology video responded with, "YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING TO APOLOGIZE FOR!" You're awesome. You did this right.

A comedian is holding themself to a higher standard than journalists and politicians.

I was rooting for you to be the next host of The Daily Show. This absolute hit piece seems clearly calculated to kill that possibility. Im so sorry you got smeared like this. You are an amazing person, and I wish you all the best in your continuing career.

I think I respect him even more. Honestly prior to this “exposé” any reasonable person would expect, and even require, that his standup should be loosely based in reality to not only protect those he talks about, but to enhance the clarity of complicated stories without rambling. He is a comedian doing standup, it is his job to not loose the audience and to evoke laughter. The fact that he is actually as close to reality as he is without endangering his former gf/family is actually super impressive. He’s consistently above and beyond in logic and emotional sway for his genre.

If anything the article should have been about how other comedians could take notes.
