I'm an AWS CWI since December 2013. Whether you weld 'uphill', 'downhilll', your electrode size and selection, all the fitment, root gap criteria, welding gas selection, etc are prescribed in the WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) by the company's / client's welding engineers and metallurgists, after weeks, months, years of weld tests done in labs long before the project ever begins. The only time 'we' decide how we want to make the weld is in our garages at home.

All those “welders” who say you can’t weld downhill clearly never worked with sheet metal or thin gauge material. Some things you can’t weld up or you will blow threw. It really comes down to what the job calls for.

YES...My uncle was caught stick welding downhill in his garage by a passing policeman and is now serving a 50 year sentence with no chance of parole. (Also avoid horizontal, it's a gateway weld...)

One of the BEST VIDEO'S I've seen.I live up here in Seattle, Wa (use to live in Dallas, Texas and went to a trade school, AMERICAN TRADE INSTITUTE and took up Welding, 1980)Moved back to Seattle, Wa and back to more pipe welding, tig, stick, ASME SEC 9, API 1104, AWS D10.9, AWS D1.1, BUT IT'S ALWAYS BEEN A BIG THING UP HERE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST IN THE SHIPYARDS THAT PIPE CAN ONLY BE WELDED IN THE"UPHILL" METHOD.IVE SEEN PIPEFITTERS IN THE SHIPYARDS WELD A-53 PIPE DOWNHILL WITH 6010&7010 ROD MANY OF TIMES ALSO MIG (.035 WIRE ON SCH.80 PIPE) FROM ROOT PASS ALL THE WAY OUT TO CAP., X-RAYED AND PASSED WITH NO PROBLEM.SO, YES PIPE CAN BE WELDED UPHILL ASWELL AS DOWNHILL ASWELL AS ROLLED WHILE WELDING.

Thats engineering at its finest. Been a welder for over 20 yrs!
I didn’t think i could learn so much in a single video. Nice job 👍🏼

As an old fart who doesn't care for change, I really agree that's it's best to try to master both up and down. Once comfortable with that, try using other hand and maybe standing on your hard side just to challenge yourself a bit more. Keep up the good vids.

I like your videos
I'm semi retired, working two, maybe three days a week.
Everyone agrees, it's a case of practice, practice, practice;
that being said, I had bin out of the game for some time, and just like in athletics, you tend to loose that "edge"
if you aren't doin' it every day.
Recently, I ended up doing some work for a client that I had done a lot of work for in the 80's
back then, I was welding(outdoors, stick) ten hours a day, six days a week
I was amazed at how much better ALL my welds were back then,
better than I do today!
Vert up; down, etc. all perfect, no flux inclusions
It was because I was doin' it all day, everyday.

Astonished to see an American using a grinder with the guard on! One of the smarter guys.

Years ago, I witnessed an Spanish welder at work who was a pipeline veteran all over the world welding up a 10" T pipe joint.

He had a stick welder in each hand welding 2 joints uphill simultaneously.

Never seen anyone do that before or since, I was truly amazed. The weld quality was excellent as well.

Did an outstanding job. I'm Retired now but wish I had a machine like that when I was an apprentice.

Hi mate, thanx for your awesome video.im a boilermaker from old school..even when I use to MIG weld I would do down hand and vertical ups.As I seen with your style you nailed it as it's all about the preparation.Root gaps and amps and techniques.I weld what I'm comfortable with and have past every destructive and non destructive test.

Nice work i appreciate the videos . I welded in a power plant but i had a friend who had welded pipe line before he came to power plant and he bailed us out a few times on some things . He was good to me and i appreciated all he showed me how to do . Thanks again

We run multiple test up hill and especially down hill and we don't need another hand to control the remote, we set the temp and run the the test and pass it.

I spy SAM! 😸

Another great video from South Coast. I like this video and and channel because it's purely educational! Sometimes they bring Spanish speakers, women, and specialists not to only show how diverse the trade is, but also reach out to the whole world. Welding truly is a passion, and I'm grateful to having this kind of content on YouTube. Not everyone has the financial resources to go to big schools like Tulsa, but I feel we still get that great quality instruction from teachers like Mr. Medrano!

Lastly, I dig the beat at the end. It makes what I'm looking at not feel all Southern and country lol

Its really about what direction the WPS calls for.

I really enjoyed this video. Your process would make the prefect weld test because it covers both up and down with a variation of rods. Pass this test and you can pipe weld anywhere.

Last I knew, get certified as a high pressure pipeline welder, you had to be able to pass a stress test on an overhead 8" steel high pressure pipe hanging overhead which requires both up and down hill and pushing and pulling a weld.
