My name is Jens Larsen, Danish Jazz Guitarist, and Educator. The videos on this channel will help you explore and enjoy Jazz. Some of it is how to play jazz guitar, but other videos are more on Music Theory like Jazz Chords or advice on how to practice and learn Jazz, on guitar or any other instrument.

The videos are mostly jazz guitar lessons, but also music theory, analysis of songs and videos on jazz guitars.

This is actually a quantum paradigm shift for me. It’s like, just consider all 12 notes as an option and use them to showcase the most salient chord tones and/or melody notes in that moment.

For decades, I've known heaps about scales and arpeggios. For years I knew about grace notes, approach tones, passing tones and Melodic Ornamentation (according to how they are taught and used in Classical Theory). I was all over enclosures (without realising what they were) like a rash. There was always something that bugged me. I knew every note in every Scale / Mode, Chord, Arpeggio and Key. What didn't add up was Jazz Musos were playing more notes and phrases in ways that I couldn't account for. What they played followed the form and chords of a song. Why couldn't I do what they did ? I could improvise but not like them. Once, I thought: 'It could be feasible to play melody tones that are preceded by other tones - to introduce tension.' Then I thought 'maybe that technique has been invented already ?' Then about five years ago I discovered 'EENNCCLLOOSSUURREESS I could have kicked myself. Why didn't I wake up to that earlier ? Apparently, in this 21st Century we also have: the wheel, instant coffee and sliced bread !! Thanks for telling me about enclosures Jens :)

I started working on the diatonic arpeggios of each note in the major scale years ago. This vid demonstrates the next step and how to apply that knowledge. Thank you!

Jens, how do you feel about using arpeggios as a basis for four note cells to outline changes?
Also, is it reasonable to want to get to a point where every note you play is played purposefully, or is some of that meant to be automatic by use of arpeggio enclosure and other soloing techniques?

Is an enclosure always a maj 2 above and a min 2 below the target note?

The enclosure is a whole step above one half step below, except for the F note... I still don't understand if it's a fixed rule or chosen by ear.

Is this what Charlie Christian was doing in Swing To Bop?
