This is the easiest thing to understand but some youtubers make it so hard to understand for some reason it makes no sense. As if they want ti have the image they can do more than you or something

This is CAGED demonstrated, not explained

That shows how some Youtubers have talent of make simple things complicated

To make this easier for everyone. What made me understand this a lot better after 10 years of trying to learn, is this. Find the root note of whatever position/shape you are playing and whatever that root note is, congratulations, you are now playing that chord. Learn the fret board. Memorize the roots of each shape and mix in minor/major shapes add 7’s or 9’s etc etc from there. Throw in a basic mapping of the major and minor pentatonic scales to add embellishments/solos and you now have a basic understanding of the guitar and music theory as a whole. The sky is the limit from there.

I sort of knew this in theory but it is really helpful to see everything connect in just 30 seconds. Thank you.

I'd been struggling...

I watched this & got it straight away. That gives me loads of potential licks now. Until I crave to learn more (that my ageing 49 year old brain can take anyway). Thanks a lot!

Don’t say “key of C.” It’s actually the C chord played with the five different shapes as you move up the neck.

One of the best systems of learning guitar ever. I learned this at musicians institute!!!

I knew about the CAGED system but I never have seen it laid out so simply!

Make them all Dominant 7’s. Easier to finger and connect, and it will provide the full octave of chord tones (1-3-5-b7). Now to those 5 CAGED Minor Pentatonic boxes, add one extra note of the Major 3rd for this: 1-b3/3-4-5-b7 so C-Eb/E-F-G-Bb. Always go UP from b3 into 3, and never down from 3 to b3. - You want to attach a Dominant 7 arpeggio to a Dominant 7 chord shape. - Play along to a one C7 chord backing track; move from one chord shape and it’s Dominant 7 arpeggio to another, connecting all 5 patterns all across the neck. Later on, move to a 3-Dom.7 chord Blues, like say A7-D7-E7.

So it took me a bit of life and studying to figure this out and I think I can break it down…
Preface: there are different ways that people chart out the chord triads.. Sometimes the numbers that are written on the strings will correspond to fret number, sometimes finger number or as in this case, relative note.
With this chart, what is plotted out are relative notes and (R) = Root. As in #RootNote as in a 1 (think similar to “Nashville number system, ” but notes and not chords.) and we are in the Key of C. *Again.. Realize: The numbers on the frets (or opens above the nut) are the notes relative to the key.*
— In this case 1= C, 3 = E, 5 = G ..As you may notice, there are multiple R/1/C’s 3/E’s and 5/G’s. and these are part of what’s called “chord ‘triads’ “ …So if you pay attention to frets and apply music theory and/or math, you can see that these ALL end up being “C” triad chords.. —> All of them are C but different “shapes”.

So here’s where the “CAGED” formula comes in: It’s about chord shapes.. not key or notes. So like she says. C shape. A shape. G shape E shape D shape.
To summarize: she’s talking about (open chord) finger shapes that correspond to a letter in the word, “cage, ” and those shapes then make up triads, and all end up being a “C ‘chord.’” And again the numbers in this chart that we have written on the frets are notes relative to the key that we are in. (C, ) and you can apply this method to other keys. You just can sort of slide the shape down, and either mute or bar what would be open strings in the chord shape. For example, if you take these shapes and slide down to fret. You will be in the key of D. Follow the shapes and you will hit the 1-3-5 of D.

From a pianists pov playing guitar as my second instrument for a decade, I never knew about the caged system, I just know how the chords sound on piano and simply transfer those sounds to guitar while being aware that some notes on the guitar are repeated. I think of the fretboard as a highway, you can go different paths that sound the same.

Wish she had said, “There are two G-shapes. One high, one low. Almost no one can play both at once and it’s not necessary.” I messed around with that combined G shape for months and it’s on every CAGED lesson and diagram. Then Sitch casually mentions, “Do it like this, . The other way is impossible.” Would have taken two more seconds for Molly to say that. People watching this lesson don’t understand what they’re seeing yet.

Basically, whatever shaped chord you are using will tell you what the next shape you can use to play the same chord.

So this helps to visualize all the positions of the fretboard in which the C chord can be played, OK.that's very cool and helpful, but what about the other chords like A G E and D?

Just understood this today and the whole board feels connected
