These are the real heroes. They risked their lives for us all. They fought with heart, bravery and were selfless. More than any politician will ever give.

I went to see the landing beaches in 2002. All were breath taking. Utah, Gold, Sword, Juno. But when I got to Omaha, and walked among the countless graves, I broke down like a little kid. They truly are The Greatest Generation.

As a Frenchman I thank all these young boys who came to fight to liberate my country, whether they are American, English, Canadian, Polish and also the French commandos of Commander Kieffer who had the honor of landing first on these bloody beaches. Thank you gentlemen.

From the UK.
Never to be forgotten. God bless our US allies. Still our best friends when the chips are down. My American
brother-in-law was wounded some days after D-Day but survived to marry my late eldest sister. They lived
out their lives together in Louisiana USA and their children (and their children!) survive them.

Some veterans have said that the opening scene from "Saving Private Ryan" is about as close a representation to what is was really like on D-Day. The bullets, the shells, the incredible noise, the screams of the wounded.
Todays generations have no idea what these heroes went through on the 6th of June 1944, not only the allies, but also the German defenders who faced the massive onslaught. For those who never returned, RIP.

We stand on the edge of living history. Whilst these men and women are with us it is our duty to hear their stories and remember them. The lives we lead today are built upon the freedom they gave us.

I never understood war until I saw Jacob’s ladder. Right now I’m watching saving private Ryan for the first time. I could not imagine storming a beach knowing you are basically a decoy. You have to go head first into your own doom.

Like one of the veterans said, they had 80-100 pounds of gear and jumped into water. My limit is about 40-50 if I need to carry something a short distance by hand. Imagine having double that weight strapped to you and being told to jump into some water. If you survive the water you’re facing what could be an even worse demise. The fact anyone made it is a miracle
