I can say confidently that there is no way Joe understand anything that is explained to him in this vid.

Okay, now I wanna see who this Witten guy is. I know I'm not even gonna comprehend what he's going to discuss but I still wanna see him on here.

It’s fascinating hearing this kind of stuff. If someone could make sense of all that we don’t understand yet that is worth a watch in my opinion.

Important context for Ed Witten: There are two frames of reference for understanding the fundamental laws of physics: “general relativity”, a theory developed by Albert Einstein that explains how gravity works; and the “standard model”, a theory about very small particles interact and cause 3 fundamental forces. Both theories are based on underlying mathematical equations that have been accepted by mathematicians and both have been tested in labs by physicists. Both models have withstood all tests to it, both mathematical and physical for about a century and are unanimously accepted by mathematicians and physicists alike. Just as unanimously mathematicians and physicists agree that both theories are incomplete because the standard model cannot explain gravity, and general relativity cannot explain the other three forces proven by the standard model. So since about the 1950’s much of the work in physics has gone into finding a way to combine general relativity and the standard model. Beginning in the 70’s mathematicians and theoretical physicists began developing a theory called string theory. It is an extension of the standard model that tried to look at a question “what if these small particles were not particles in a four dimensional space, but strings in a 10 dimensional space?” This theory was encouraged and developed followers for about 20 years. Some of these followers include names you may know like Michio Kaku and Brian Greene. In 1995, this man Edward Witten claimed to have came up with a math theorem that could prove string theory. He called this “M Theory.” This is just one proposed math proof out of many but Witten believes this theory is the correct one because it not only explains string theory, it also explains an extension of general relativity called “eleven dimensional super gravity, ” which is exactly what it sounds like. If he’s right this is a compelling framework for building a “unified theory” that unifies GR and SM. This theory set off a flurry of research by mathematicians. But physicists have not yet been able to find a way to test this theory experimentally. Here’s Eric’s gripe: Ed Witten took the math to such a complex place that we’ve now spent half a century working on a theory that hasn’t produced anything physically provable. And the outcome is that we’ve made no real advancement in physics in generations. In short, string theory is not the rousing success it’s made out to be. It’s a failure. And a tragic one because the closer we get to nuclear Armageddon or getting wiped out by a pandemic the more string theory looks like a waste of time. A truly new realm of physics could unlock the possibility of sustaining human life off an inevitably doomed earth. Eric proposed his own “unified theory” called “geometric unity” that I suspect is a bit of a parody of string theory that he put out to make fun of string theorists while taking advantage of useful idiots like Joe to promote his message. Ed Witten will tell you that the math needs more time to work out but will eventually lead to a workable theory.

He was not the only one. You will have the work of Polyakov, Orlando Alvarez etc. in 1981-82. Witten was also a lead but saying he came out of nowhere is just nonsense.

I like Joe's "whoa", which loosely translated means: I have no idea what you are talking about, but I need to say something at this point.

I'm imagining Everyone in the String Theory Field in unison saying "This is the way" whenever String Theory is mentioned...

I could listen for hours to both Weinstein bro`s, although ''opposing'' sciences. They`re amazing!
