Just to let you know, Ed Witten is so good, that he got awarded the fields medal (Nobel prize in math) for his work in quantum field theory. His work in physics was so mathematically beautiful that he won the award in math.

Ed Witten is like the nicest dude on Earth. If people are afraid of challenging him, then that's just because he's an intellectual powerhouse. But listen to the guy speak. He's a sweetheart. Whether he's ultimately right or wrong—and I generally tend to think that there's no such thing as a graviton—his heart is in the right place. You can see the awe and excitement in his face. He doesn't have any nefarious motives.

Well, you can always be scathing about the status quo in science, after all science will never be ready. Now, if you're as incapable of pointing out something new as others, then you're not really doing anything useful. Everyone has already realized that the thing is not working the way it is, the problem remains how to overcome this fact.

Weinstein's just mad that his geometric unity theory isn't as popular because it hasn't been peer-reviewed like String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity. He hasn't clearly laid out his theory, making it hard for other scientists to evaluate it. The mainstream theories have tons of research and papers backing them up, while Geometric Unity is still kinda vague. Plus, it hasn't made any clear predictions that can be tested. So, people are skeptical and stick with what has more popularity, even though they're not testable either.
