Airplane Without Wings, Let's Try Something Different! | Scrappy #42

What is the best wing for Mike Patey's Scrappy Cub? A wing design done in Solidworks that will enable his bush plane to maximize both slow flight and top speed? Mike Patey explores the possibilities of wing design and the questions that come up during the wing design of his bush plane, Scrappy. Using Solidworks and flow analysis, Mike takes a look at the effects of certain design choices, and ultimately comes to a design freeze...the wing design for Scrappy has been completed!

😤 Mike almost went missing last night at 2:30 a.m. when he got me out of bed at our hotel, after a late flight, to record the bit after the outro. BUT!! I see you all appreciated it which makes me feel better about it.🥰

I don't fly planes. I've never eve been in a single engine airplane. I have no real interest in private aviation. BUT I am absolutely hooked on watching these videos! Watching someone do something they love doing is always fun to watch. Watching someone push the limits in their field, finding new solutions to problems, painstakingly tweeking things until they are at their absolute peak in performance is fascinating!

"I know some of you guys stick around to the end" - Yeah, Mike... that's all of us buddy!

26 years in the Air Force and have seen leading edge flaps before. Never thought I would see them on a small aircraft would be a great accomplishment.

How does he not have 1, 000, 000+ subscribers? This channel should be referenced by every physics teacher just to illustrate to students what you can do with the right knowledge and drive.

This is literally the definition of EXPERIMENTAL, this is going to be extremely awesome and exiting. Thanks for being an inspiration and keep up the good work.

Never realized the study of airflow over a wing could be so much fun whilst being the best explanation I've ever heard! This really is innovative and experimental development of concept, design and manufacturing and all of it hands on. Really looking forward to watching this wing being brought into the world.

Us: Do you want speed or stol capabilities?

Mike: Yes..

Just amazing and inspirational. From adding a flowerbox to a deck with scrap lumber to creating an airplane out of scrap parts and brand new ideas, this guy always goes the extra mile.

How can we bottle even a diluted version of that Patey drive and get it into schools? The next generation needs this more than anyone can know.

Mike, nothing but respect. Aviation gets the benefit. It's a pleasure to watch every bit of progress and all of the fun you're having while doing great things.

I have mentally prepared myself for Mike to show up with a ufo at this point. The best of both worlds

This is exactly why Mike is such a huge inspiration to people like me who love flight and engineering.

Well boys, we did it....we made him talk about the wings...
But seriously though you are such an inspiration.
Keep going mate.

Holly crap guys. This guy is literally a Genius in modern day aviation. I feel so pleased to be in his presence. This is going to be amazing

The passion you have for aviation is impressive. Difficult to find anyone these days that smiles as much as you while talking about something. You're inspiring me to pickup flight lessons this spring.

BY A MILE my favourite MP video of all time! I am so excited to hear of your variable camber thinking, we have been working on a concept for altering the camber along the full span but in a way that it varies differently at the tips as it does at the roots and is integral and linked to various phases of flight and operation. Our system employs a rotating actuator and a semi-flexible skin but we have suffered one challenge after the other, that's after tackling the obvious questions like how to keep it lightweight, not overly complex and expensive, how to, like a bird, fully alter the shape and size of a wing physically and relation to airflow and state and in as natural and unobtrusive a manner and not disruptive to the physics and operation of the wing. There's a NASA and various studies on this but all were extremely complex and jointed/segmented leading to unnatural action.

That's one reason why I am so in love with this video, but another that's just as important to me is that finally, we are taking steps to have a complete aesthetic so that I can finalize the slowest aircraft portrait of all time! When I saw you finalize and be sure of the design and size of your empennage I had a suspicion that you had a pretty good idea of the wing design already although I am sure it would have needed much refinement since. I CANNOT WAIT!!

P.S I wasn't aware it was even an option to not watch to the very end, and then stare at the blank space wishing there was more.

When most people drop a bomb like that, everyone thinks "yeah right". When Mike says it, we're all, "sweet, can't wait for the next episode"

I’m obsessed with watching and learning from these builds. The shear amount of fine detail built in is remarkable.
I’ve gotta build my own plane now. I’m a military pilot, lots of time on the T-6 Texan 2, and you’re inspiring me to learn aero eng to build my own monster.

I feel like the world would have more people like Mike if our education sytem was designed to uplift high energy intelligent children. Currently, these kids are put at conflict with the school system when many of them have have the greatest potential.

This was fascinating, Mike, but really just served as a lesson on how unintelligent I am after fifty seven years on this planet! You're an inspiration.
