Hours and hours of work later, we were finally able to remove the wings from the 401! After some trial and error on the first wing we were able to remove the second with a lot more ease. However, for almost every bolt, we still needed to manipulate multiple jack points to get the perfect position to be able to remove them. Check out this weeks video to see us complete one of the last major tear downs we’ll have to do to this aircraft before starting to finally build it back up again!

I used to do this as a younger man when I lived in Indiana.i really enjoyed purchasing derelict or damaged aircraft and rebuilding them. I did very well at it and certainly miss it. I'm in my early 60's now living in Florida and no longer have the facility or finances to do so. Watching your videos bring back great memories. Thank you and hopefully I will see you at Oskosh. Best Regards Ronnie Combs

I don't think you can take any more of this plane apart. At this point you are literally building an airplane. Good job hanging in there with all this work. Props to all of you putting in so much work.

Watching this entire process really gave me greater appreciation for what my Dad did in the Army Air Corp during WWII in the South Pacific as a airframe specialist. Growing up I heard his stories of fixing battle damaged B-25s, C-47s, P-51s, and other aircraft. Also cannibalizing wings, fuselages, engines, etc. from severely damages aircraft to rebuild new complete (Frankenstein) aircraft. And all this while working in the hot tropical heat and monsoon rains, living in tents, eating Spam and powdered eggs, and suffering from malaria - all for 4 years. I didn't appreciate that effort he went through until I saw what it took to rebuild the 401.

I was a naysayer before...no logs...but now logs and new wings...good job.

I am 100% confident you will get it apart, it is getting it back together again is where I think you will struggle.

I've seen F-14s torn down to parade rest like that and we put them back together. It's just work and putting one foot in front of the other. Whether or not you can make your self imposed schedule is really the only question. Finding those parts in Belgium was huge! Thanks, Jason. I'm in it for the long run. If I was in Pennsylvania, I'd volunteer some labor.

Jason my brother, you guys GOT THIS!!! The Lord blesses acts of kindness. He just doesn't make them easy - but heck, wouldn't be worth doing if it wasn't hard!!

Hello from the UK, I've been watching the 401 project from the start and the work you've done and the progress made is absolutely huge. Anyone suggesting otherwise, is deluded.

I applaud all your efforts to get this 401 Airworthy by 2023 Oshkosh. What a very noble cause you a have going here. As an aviator (Com'l Pilot and A&P) I am being educated in nearly every video I have watched. Removing wings without jeopardizing the spars is an accomplishment in itself. A good airframe man can fix those two 4" Sq. aluminum cutouts in very little time. If that spar was damaged you might have to scrap the project. GOOD JOB!

I really hope I can get the wife and kids to Oshkosh, I went to airshows quite a bit when I was a kid but haven't been to one in ages. That would be so fun to meet you guys and roam around the airport.

my dad in restoring cars (the car I'm referring too as well as others is a 1964 ford thunderbird convertible and was built for the world's fair, in 64) HE would take the old parts and collect a few more in his search of parts. he would clean them up repaint and recondition them keep one spare and resell the others. so take the time to clean up the parts and use them for spares or resell them

Hey Jason, feel like I need to help but I'm not real close. I want this plane to fly again because I would really like to ride in her when she's all new. Been watching every video you've put out. Don't stop I'm hooked! Love it!

Hey Jason, thank u for the words of encouragement, the reminder of no matter how difficult or hard something gets, we do not ever give up, especially as pilots. One step at a time..Aside from being a huge rebuild rescue fan 😂 im almost at the end of completing my IATPL and you may know it can get really tough. Thank you for the awesome valuable content🤜🤛

As my grandfather use to say. Just keep hugging and a chalking and eventually you will get around the big ol' girl.
Best of luck and my hopes are with you.
