I’m glad they won the case, heartbreaking too lose a family member like that.

A screwdriver is stainless steel, which is not the same as the rods that are TITANIUM. The difference is literally life-and-death. Titanium is _extremely_ resistant to rusting.

That surgeon was meant to be a mechanic.

Biomedical engineer here, depending on the material the screwdriver was made off, it's quite possible they man might have developed an infection that further complicated his health.
When interacting with biological environments, most materials degrade at least partially, releasing elements that damage the body. That's why materials like titanium are used for implants, either they're more resistant to corrosion, they integrate to the body safely or they degrade without releasing harmful elements.

I know someone who had two titanium screws in his spine and both of them snapped.
He had to be on the strongest painkillers available and had moment where his legs just gave. Still an awesome guy and I wish him the best

Let me preface this by saying I don't really know a lot about medicine and surgery, however a lot of the materials they put into your body such as screws and rods are made of titanium because it doesn't tarnish and rust like steel does!

The doctor Robert Ricketson said he had no choice because he didn't have the correct tools and didn't want to leave the patient Arturo Iturralde(73) on the bench for 2 more hours with an unstable spine.
The surgery happened on January 2001, the doctor got sued around the 2006 year.
Botched fix broke in a few days regardless and the patient died two years later.
Nurses retrieved the evidence of the screwdriver and reported him.
The family of the patient found out later that the doc had a string of malpractice lawsuits, wrote take prescriptions to get drugs, and had a treatment for narcotics addiction

Who is stupid enough to think that a tool that was never meant to be in someone's spine, would put it in someone's spine and expect a successful result? Insane 😤

Explanation for why the screwdriver snapped:
The bending, twisting, and pulling forces from your spine can cause tiny cracks in metals that aren’t forged to withstand them. The man reportedly fell and it would’ve caused the makeshift rod to snap at one of the cracks. The screwdriver was only in the man for four days so corrosion in the body wouldn’t have caused the fracture as some are suggesting.

The sudden cut to the patient’s picture and the family crying at his funeral felt both sad and uncanny.
