Gripping the javelin with your Thumb and index finger behind the binding is probably the best option. While the middle finger is stronger than the index finger it is less "natural" and does not provide the same amount of leverage that the index finger provides. And it is less comfortable as it does not rotate in the lever action of the wrist as well as the index finger option does.

There are several natural levers in the body that can be employed to provide acceleration, speed and power to assist the throw.

These are the wrist, the elbow, the shoulder joint and the arch of your back. One should endeavor to make the most of each of these levers and maximise the effect and advantages it offers to optimise power and speed for the throw.

If employed correctly it has the same combined effect as the whipping action of a whip. And as you know the tip of a whip can break the sound barrier as it whips around which is what results in the cracking sound it makes.

The wrist provides the final whipping (lever) action in the throw. It starts with the back and follows through the shoulder and the elbow up to the wrist. Even the fingers itself has some lever action / whipping action to contribute to the throw.

One can easily test the whipping action of the wrist to determine which fingers are best suited for the grip.
Just hold the palm of your throwing hand above your shoulder as if a javelin is resting in your hand and flick your palm forward as if you are launching a javelin. Now try and flick you wrist with your middle finger and thumb PRETENDING TO grip the javelin and flick throw the javelin forward fast. You will find it is not nearly as natural and comfortable as gripping it with your thumb and index finger behind the ribbing.

It worked for me when I was throwing many years ago and hope it is of some use to you.
Happy throwing. (Enjoy it while you can. Days will come when you will long to throw a javelin again)
