What I understood from this ayah is that it doesn’t apply 100% to the worldly life. It applies for Akhirah. Where pious men in heaven will have pious women. This world is a place of trial and sometimes, your spouse becomes a trial/test for you. That’s what I think. Indeed Allah knows the best.

My understanding is, that however bad a man or a woman is compared to their spouse, they should always strive to improve themselves as a human being. And a good spouse will show good upright example and encourage the other half until they become a good person or better.
