DO BRAIDS CAUSE HAIR LOSS? How much are those braids REALLY costing you?

How much are those braids REALLY costing you?
Braids are a great protective style, but many times they are simply too tight! The tension on the scalp and pulling around the hairline can lead to traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a hair loss condition caused by tension or excessive pulling on the scalp.

Braids, tight ponytails, and sew-ins that are too tight can cause traction alopecia. It is important to stop doing the style that leads to traction alopecia. Usually the hair will recover. If the braids are causing bumps around the hairline, take them out.

Very true. I am an hair stylist and i always leave out my clients edges. If you insist on me pinching your edges, then you are not getting that hair done by me

Braids are so tempting. Just took down after 1.5 month. Struggling with all the hair loss, now natural hair is shorter.Hairline is a mess! Washed conditioned and twisted. Learning be more patient. Ty for this community.

This is so true! Especially if you are middle age you have to protect all your precious hair follicles. I took my crochet braids out after one week because my body was sending me these signals the entire time!

I don't wear tight styles but I did get traction alopecia from a headband. I had a little bald spot on top of my head. Luckily it has grown back.

I braid my hair but I don't pull them tight. People tell me my braids shouldn't be loose but I make it work with my own style so I don't lose my hair. Loose braids styled into my own style are better than going bald.

I got box braids one week ago and have bumps on the back of my neck and have now just noticed that my hair is coming out of my scalp. I thought it was dandruff but on closer inspection i realised it was the hair follicles. I will be taking them out immediately. I do not want to lose my hair.

I paid $220 and within 3 days I took it out which was the day before my vacation. It was so tight. I started feeling throbbing in my scalp and the itching got so intense. Never again. I will always do my own braids.

Braids only cause hair loss if they’re too tight aren’t being worn properly or your not taking care of your real hair and scalp while having them in

Thank You for taking the time to make this video

I think sisterlocs would help because you aren’t pulling or manipulating your hair. The hairline would actually grow back as well but they are expensive but worth it.

About 4 years ago I got my hair braided for the first time. I kept telling the lady to not braid it so tight, but she kept doing it tightly. I said at least 10 times that she was braiding it too tightly. Anyway, I went home and I couldn't take the pain. I spent $100 and didn't keep it in for even 3 hours. It was not worth the pain or the eventual hair loss. I never got braids again.

Great video 🏆 I've notice a toddler with box braids. My concern is that she will loose her hairline. Please, do you have a video about toddlers and tight hair styles? I did share this video. If there is a toddler video about protecting hairline, it may remove any excuses. Thank you again for such an informative video.💐

I had my braids in and I had them for two weeks and they weren’t tight but they were heavy and I was noticing a lot f the follicles being pulled. When I took them out I lost SO much hair she said a lot is normal but I was really scared and now my hair doesn’t feel the same…I don’t think I’ll be doing it again for a while 😞 which is a shame cause I loved having long braids but now I’m scared

I just got into an argument with my friend last night that I've known for 25 years She's a black woman and I am a Puerto Rican man and I told her that braids are not good for your hair because it causes hair loss from pulling the hair from the follicles killing the hair follicles. She got so upset and started yelling at me you're not a black woman! and not all black woman lose their hair because of braids. But I mentioned to her have you noticed that a lot of women that wear tight braids have their hairline is all the way up there foreheads? I also had to remind her that my ex-wife was a black woman and I've witnessed all the hair problems that are being mentioned here.

I have some hair follicles at every braid. I wear box braids for 1 month. Is it the normal amount of hair that is falling out (150 per day) or i should thake them off??

I have had my braids for almost two months and they were made so tight. I noticed that my hair was getting thinner and I even lost a little section of my hair and a lot of hair on my hairline bec of this. I took the braids that were hurting my head out and braided it again. The problem is that I'd like to take them out bc I even have bumps but my mom won't allow it. But I always have this problem when I have braids ( I don't do them always. Just like once every two years) but my hair always grew back. I'm so scared that it won't grow back.
