In this video we explain how to care for your Juniper Bonsai tree, also known as the Juniperus. Watering, pruning, fertilizing - all these topics are discussed. Keeping a Juniper Bonsai alive is not a difficult task, but there are a few things you should be aware of. For more information, also check:

Bonsai trees are planted in small pots with minimal space for water and nutrient reserves. That means you need to water and fertilize your tree regularly. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of light, water, and fertilize when needed and your tree is sure to thrive!

If you are not entirely sure about your tree species, you can use this guide to ID your Bonsai:

This video was filmed in the Japanese garden of Clingendael. We also like to thank Deshima Bonsai.

I have a medium sized juniper bonsai tree that was gifted to me today I couldn't be happier with it. I love it so much 🥰

I’ve kept a juniper indoors under lights for 13 yrs and counting. Recently I started placing it outdoors on my new patio in summer. It’s the one with tiny compact needles, I think Japanese. They need lots of water and humidity trays. I’m in Toronto so the winters are too cold outside, but the Netherlands is fine outside in winter.

I live in Siberia. Traditional bonsai species die outside in winter unless they are brought inside, which is not good for them either. So I made my own bonsai from the Siberian pine, a close relative of the Japanese white pine, and also from the Siberian larch. This winter all my bonsai got damaged or even died (it was - 40 C). But the Siberian pine seems to feel even better. Weirdly, the Korean pine got hardly any damage. Northern white cedar got significant damage (but all 4 survived). All my 4 Scots pines, which are actually the most common tree species here, died completely.

I have a Itoigawa Shimpaku Juniper coming from an online nursery this week. It looks like it is a pre-bonsai and not trimmed at all. It is coming in a 6 inch plastic growers pot.

Hey love the vid, but I have a question. I live in Arizona and it’s around 110 Fahrenheit right now, should I still put the tree outside!

I have a Juniper I’ve had for 13 years grown indoors under lights year round, though I now put it on the my new deck for four months in summer…. It has fine small needles, probably Japanese or common juniper, not like the ones you have there…. The typical one they sell.

I got my first at Christmas last year. I never had one and didnt know they were suppose to stay outside. It did well inside near a window bit I just got around to looking it up.
Im still not even sure which type it is since my sister and mom bought it online. I didn't even think to ask or look it up.
I put it out when it got warm but unfortunately I was worried about deer eating it at night but would put it out. I watered when dry but then I got paranoid it was drying out when the spine started to look pale. I thought it was due to the sun like maybe if its in direct and hot sun it somehow dries the spines. Sometimes it gets more green again but recently the top part gotten pale.
I now know it needs sun but now Im wondering what to do.

When repotting, I read your meant to cut a third of the roots off. Can you do a video about that?

Thank you SOOOO much! I just got my Juniper and tried to watch so many videos but they were all very vague, but this was amazingly helpful!! I did wonder how to protect it in 15 degrees Fahrenheit or lower weather? You mentioned that it should be protected, how shall I do that?

Really helpful video Oscar, thank you for sharing.

When repotting a Juniper from a garden centre pot (plastic) to a bonsai pot, is it safe to clean out all the old soil or should some be left in the root ball please?

Hi Oscar, I was curious how you prevent pine trees from having the leaves turn brown. This seems to be happening after I prune or wire. Can you give me some ideas on how to prevent this from happening? Thank you so much.

can they handle hot climates like in SEA?

When you say we need to place it in the shade for the first month does that mean indirect sunlight outside or can it be indoors with indirect or direct sunlight? Maybe it needs wind and humidity I suppose
