Cover Crops in the Garden #gardeningtips

Cover crops are typically sowed in the fall but this year I tried something different.

We had some older seed that we tried planting in the fall but it never germinated so when spring time rolled around, we figured it’s better to fill the space than leave it bare!

Cover crops help fix nitrogen back into the soil and also prevent erosion. Next time you have an empty space in your garden and don’t know what to do with it, consider planting something like Crimson Clover!

We weren’t sure if it would bloom with the warmer temps, but it did and is looking great!

ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.

We upload a YouTube video every week and post daily on Instagram!

Native plants are always better for pollinators. These are native to Europe. Always research what is native in your area, it really does matter. 🌼

As i understand, when nitrogen-fixing plants bloom, it uses up the nitrogen its produced. I believe you have to cut and cover before the bloom or seed

I grow my cover crop in the summer. Everyone I know grows them in the summer. I cut it for hay.

I'm new to gardening so sorry if this is a dumb question but how do you know when to cut them down (i.e. how do you tell if the plants are about to seed?) Is there a rough timline in weeks on how long that usually takes?
