I grew up on a farm in Missouri (I am old now), and we would rotate our fields, planting clover every second year in some fields in the late summer/early fall. In the Spring, we mowed it as short as possible before discing the field in preparation to plant beans/fescue/wheat, whatever. I never understood why we did this until now. Even then, we used a minimal-till system to cut moisture loss and save money, buying less diesel (16-20 CENTS per gallon - I told you I was old). In my raised beds, I plant clover and/or peas in Northern Colorado. I have two beds, each 20x8 feet, and with my compost and a little help from a local dairy farmer, I can grow organic vegetables - less expensive and better for the food consumer. I don't sell anything, but I swap with neighbors and give away lots and lots of squash & cucumbers. You have a great channel. Even though I grew up growing food, I learned much about gardening from your channel. I have the best garden in the HOA, and people offer me money every year to buy all sorts of food from the garden. Education from your channel (and a couple of others) has pushed my garden to the next level. From just over 300sqft, we grow hundreds of pounds of food. Thank you so much.

I have Root Knot Nematodes so my cover crop are French Marigold and Muster Green to hand till back into the bed as soon as they get bigger.

The subject of cover crops is so confusing to me, but your video was very helpful. Seemed like a good idea but I couldn’t figure out when I’m supposed to plant a cover crop when my garden is always occupied. Thanks for answering that question. I think I’ll stick with building compost for my little garden.

Well I have been looking at some of the cover crops and the one that interest me is the crimson clover. It can benefit me in the fact the blossom can be dried or used fresh for tea. I am going to check into it and see if if has good health benefits 🙂, you made my day. Thank you

I use no dig raised beds. All but one of them are planted with crops that will grow throughout the winter (Alabma 7B). When my peppers are done, they will be chopped and dropped with the roots left in the soil to feed the soil biology. The leaves are starting to fall, so I will be gathering them, using them to cover my containers and empty beds, as mulch, to fill my compost bin, and I'll be saving what I can in covered trash cans for use later in the year.

You forgot to mention that "Winter Rye" is cereal rye, not rye grass. If you have a farm store near you, they usually have cereal rye seed and crimson clover seed

I had some fun this summer. I mulched with 'seeding straw'. I didn't know that meant it has seeds in it. My goodness I had some weeding to do.🤪

My husband and I use a mixture. Its winter rye, wheat, buckwheat, radish & something else I forget. It dies off late winter. Makes a huge difference, we started with clay.

Thank you for the informative video. Didn't know when to cut to ground but you made it clear to cut down when they start to bloom.

Great video Brian, thanks! I never planted cover crops and thus far I have not even been outside to start my vegetable garden preparation. For right now I plan to use all the cardboard boxes to create my garden area and then put wood chips down, water it and wait until spring to plant. I will plant garlic and onions and I bought some brassicas and will plant those. Also I will plant fruit trees.💞🤗💞

My cover crop seeds just arrived and we have freezing temps for two nights in about 7/8 days. I think I'm still going to give it a go and see how they do. We'll still have some temperature fluctuations into November. I'm in Virginia zone 7A and it has been much cooler earlier than this time last year. Great video information as always.

I'm a little late but I just saw your Jan. 26th, 2020 video regarding your health. Thank you so much for being so vulnerable and sharing this with us. It's given me a deeper appreciation for you. Personal accounts give us a much greater idea about what these ailments look like. Thank you, Thank you, Thank YOU!!!

Exactly what I needed!!!! I already bought CC seeds but was hesitating to plant because I didn’t have a plan yet and I still have things growing in each bed and thought they needed to wrap up before planting CCs. Perfect timing!! Excited to start improving this soil without having to buy expensive bagged compost, especially with the increased prices of everything lately 🥳🥳😅😅

Excellent. I was wondering about cover crops, as I have heard the farmers are using them a lot, and did not understand the process. Thanks for educating me on this. Appreciated.

I love my cover crops, not only do they benefit the garden but great for my worms. I'm growing in a couple 3 x 3 raised beds organic no till and loving it. Let that cover crop grow and chop n drop top dress add more straw and get ready for those plants to explode! My only regret is learning organic so late in life, but so far loving it and playing with the worms my super heroes is a bonus
