Delta Plane Narrowly Avoids Mid-Air Collision With Jet

Police dash camera captures a near tragedy in the sky. A Delta plane taking off from Syracuse, New York, came dangerously close to an American Eagle jet that took off first. They came between 700 and 1,000 feet from each other. In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration says, "An air traffic controller instructed [the American Eagle flight] to go around at Syracuse Hancock International Airport to keep it safely separated from an aircraft that was departing on the same runway."

This near miss demands a thorough investigation.

Being an air traffic controller is definitely a job I would never want to do. One little mistake….

What sound did the tire make when it hit the ground?

BOEING. BOEING. BOEING.

Imagine being on the plane and just see a jet almost hit you.

bro united just hates tires at this point

A tire coming off is just POOR air craft maintenance by the carrier not Boeing manufacturing.

As an aviation guy, this is probably the most rare occurrence I ever seen.

This could've been the first commercial American air disaster since 2009.

A reminder to the general public that planes have something called 'TCAS' or Traffic Collision and Avoidance System, it notifies both planes when they get too close to each other, and directs one to climb and the other to descend to avoid collision. So, the worst you'll get is a near miss. Planes (for the most part) have a frick ton of safety systems to keep you safe.

Just from some quick geolocating, based off the camera angle, this happened about a mile west of the departure end of RWY28 at KSYR. Considering airliners typically fly instrument flight rules, the Delta flight was likely on the Syracuse Two Departure, which would have the pilot climb out on runway heading to 4000 feet before being vectored onto his requested course. Since the smaller American Eagle jet looked to be level, I doubt a collision would have occurred, as neither pilot had to evasively maneuver to avoid each other. The American Eagle jet likely has a higher climb gradient, hence why he was level while the Delta plane was still in the climb. I see two scenarios of fault:

1. ATC erroneously gave takeoff clearance to the Delta flight without ensuring proper separation or ensuring the American Eagle flight was given vectors to move away from runway heading.
2. The Delta pilot mistakenly believed he was given takeoff clearance (was actually told to line up and wait), was task saturated, and took off without checking in with ATC to be sure of his actions.

Scenario 1 is more likely, as the American Eagle jet likely climbed to altitude, slowed to its filed airspeed, and was awaiting departure vectors when the Delta flight caught up to them.

Still, this is a huge break down in crew resource management. The copilot could quite easily hop on comms and confirm their clearance, verify separation via ADS-B, or attempt to gain a visual on the American Eagle flight since the airport looks to be visual flight rules. Even though ATC is supposed to ensure separation of aircraft on IFR flight plans, it doesn’t relinquish the pilot of the responsibility to see and avoid, especially when the ability to do so is very much possible.

Now this is Inside Edtion we love. A story within a story. Not these commercials fit in a video with a misleading title.

700ft separation is not good and it’s scary, but 1, 000ft is legal separation between two aircraft in the air. If it is 1, 000 feet, it’s no big deal and maybe the dash cam made it look way closer

Kudos to the pilot for not using an expletive to ask that question.

I’m telling you the incompetence at all levels of society now is just stunning. Everyone just wants to hurry back to their phones so they can tik tok. No one does their jobs anymore. Which is why does fall
Off of planes, wheels, planes nearly colliding etc. I will never fly commercial again. No matter what the reason.
