Two giants of the Canadian automotive landscape battle for compact crossover supremacy

While these two little rigs might not set blistering lap times, raise the bar for torque or towing, travel hundreds of kilometres on free electrons, or even get hearts racing, they are the true giants of the Canadian auto industry. Coming from the incredibly popular compact crossover segment that they created, we are here to pit the Toyota RAV4 against its archival and longtime nemesis, the Honda CR-V.

The RAV4 is fresh from a complete redesign for the 2019 model year, so the CR-V, a couple of years into its generational cycle, has its work cut out for it to claim superiority over a rival with all the latest tech and gadgets. And as these things go, both are indeed loaded to the roof rails with every gadget and feature available to each model line, the CR-V showing up in Touring trim at $39,090 plus a $1,795 freight and PDI charge. The Toyota RAV4 is a Limited AWD model, ringing in at $40,690 with $1,815 for freight & PDI, and while it is fully loaded, there is a more expensive RAV4 out there if you opt for the same trim with a hybrid powertrain ($42,090 + PDI). Those prices are practically a dead heat, so each will prove its value through merit, showing its practicality, feature content and engineering excellence.

Scotty Kilmer said it best. Toyota sticks to tried and true older tech for ultra reliability, but Honda doesn't mind pushing the tech further - albeit sometimes with a few complaints, like the oil dilution issue. That said, the older CRV is still a better value and out-performs the newer RAV in daily use and I can say my 2017 CRV still doesn't exhibit any issues. I love having Android Auto, but wish US spec CRVs had the pano sunroof.

I got a chance to test drive both, almost the same smooth ride but i end up with the CRV, if im gonna choose toyota i rather get the HIGHLANDER over Rav4 just add a little bit more of money.

Excellent review, I have a request can you please make a comparison video of the Honda safety sense (CR-V) vs Toyota safety sense (RAV4).

Tested them both last weekend; Honda is better by FAR. Toyota is loud and so much wind noise at +80km speeds. I hope Honda has fixed the oil issue with the turbo because I'm getting one next month.

RAV-4 have Parking sonars on limited model, but BSM is only flashing, but not producing audio warning, steering is heated only on upper side, but not full as in other SUV, s. Honda offering parking sonars as accessory and not factory option and BSM is only on right side and not left.In my opinion driving a car is all about safety, warnings and parking options

I'm torn between these two cars. I test drove both back to back yesterday (yes, I observed social distancing). I really enjoyed the RAV4....but I have to admit the CRV accelerated quicker, smoother, and quieter. It just drives better. But dang, the Toyota is cool looking. I still do not know what to do.

I will take the RAV4 over the CRV due to the CRV having issue of gasoline leaks into the engine (Honda called oil delution). I am going to trade my 2017 CRV to the RAV4 cause my CRV has the issue Honda try to fix nice but not fixed & Honda told me it is normal which I know BS

Is there a locking differential button at this trim level for either of these vehicles?

I wonder if you had the hybrid Toyota if it would’ve changed the decision one way or the other?

So there's a panoramic moonroof option for the CRV here in Canada in all provinces like Manitoba? Or is it only available in Ontario?

CRV is just better than the RAV4 in almost every way.
