When you chose to make the material transparent (using the alpha channel), it rendered it all weird because it was writing to the depth buffer by default. You may want to disable the depth buffer for transparent materials (it's usually the way).

I like the spec intensity but the smoothness or back lighting is not particularly good looking. Do you know if its possible to remove it but keep the spec intensity/shininess ?

Unity wins with this update. This because not everyone will able able write nice shaders in CG code and this will give us better quality games.
