In this video, we’re going to talk about when NOT to take bile salts.

Most people need bile salts. Usually, they’re not producing enough.

What are bile salts?
Bile salts are made by the liver and are stored in the gallbladder. When the gallbladder stores the bile salts, it concentrates them. Bile is a super-concentrated mixture to help break down fats so you can extract fat-soluble vitamins and essential fatty acids from your food.

We make about a quart of bile every day, and 90% of the bile is recycled. There are many benefits of bile. It is also necessary to help a person detoxify chemicals. You can take purified bile salts to help digest fats and prevent gallstones.

When not to take bile salts:

1. If you have diarrhea
2. If you have a hyperthyroid condition
3. If you have bile malabsorption

What to do if you’re body is making too much bile, or you have too much bile:

• Lower the amount of fats in your diet to about 60g per day (not any lower)

I had my gallbladder removed couple years ago. As of recent, I have been feeling nauseous and eating has come down to a minimum. I took bile salt and it eliminated the nausea and can eat a lot more than before.
Thank you. It really does help! Truly. Thank you!

No one told me to take Bile salts after my gallbladder was removed 15 years ago! Thank You, Dr. Berg!!!

I think the key is timing. If you take bile with food you may be increasing alkalinity in your stomach. Bile salts need to be taken in between meals, and hcl and enzymes alongside meals.

I had my gallbladder removed about 5 years and no one told me that. I have pretty much constant diaharea ever since. I must say it's like 20 days per month. I'll try that.

Dr. Berg, I have celiac disease and fatty liver. I’m on my 4th or 5th bottle of your gall bladder formula which I started using before stumbling on this video. Your gall bladder formula has helped both my digestion and my liver problem tremendously and my symptoms of a sluggish thyroid have also improved. Nothing bad has happened, only good results.

I had my gallbladder removed recently and have been dealing with diarrhea. I’ve been taking a tsp of psyllium husk at breakfast and another at dinner time—no more issues!

First up, I absolutely love your work Dr B. You are my no.1 goto for wellbeing info. Thank you 10, 000+ times (at least twice for each of your videos). Having said that, please clarify and help me to dispel some confusion over what appears prima facie to be a contradiction between this video where SIBO is a contraindication for use of Bile Salts, and several of your other videos which advocate Bile Salts for SIBO. Much gratitude in advance.

THIS is the missing piece to my health puzzle! Thank you! [no gallbladder, oxbile made things worse, just learned about SIBO - and not getting the results from KETO/IF - I just never discovered their connection - 7 yrs of this, and now I have something to work with - thank you!]

"3:08" -- When gallbladder has been removed, lots of bile flooding down into the system, so diarrhea. Bile acid binder is generally recommended ("3:22").

Thank you for clearing this up! I have severe bile acid malabsorption and have had frequent and severe diarrhea since having my gall bladder removed 16 years ago BUT I have actually also had several bouts of severe constipation that have clogged me up completely with severe diarrhea behind the clog and it is horrible. I get so sick and actually vomit bile! It is extremely painful and I get dizzy, severely nauseated, severe cold sweats and I have to lie down on the bathroom floor or I will faint! I got a rubber ball with a plastic tip that I expel warm water into my rectum to break up these clogs. I’m also taking Cholesteramine for the diarrhea but have to be very careful not to take too much bc it can trigger constipation and that is THE WORST I HAVE EVER FELT IN MY LIFE! If anyone else has these issues I mentioned, please reply to my post and let me know what you have done or what your doctor said bc I can’t seem to get any reasoning for this from my doctors!!!! Thanks!

Can you go into a little more detail on why those with Celiac should not take bile salts and are there exceptions to that? I went back and rewatched it twice and don't get it. My husband has Celiac, hasn't been 'glutened' in over a year. But he does show some symptoms of insufficient bile.

Dear Dr. Berg, please advise how long should one take bile salts supplement …and how long should it take before the body is healed and able to produce bile on its own so it does not need supplementation anymore? Thank you.

I have constant pain under my rib cage on the left. Sometimes pretty bad. I was going to take bile salts but just saw Dr Berg's video saying don't take bile salts if you have celiac disease which I do. I was hospitalized for over 2 weeks in 2016 with biliary sepsis and some biliary sludge. No gall stones. After exploratory surgery I was told one bile duct is smaller than normal and is fused into my intestine which is causing a back-up of sludge to the liver which according to one doctor maybe the cause of my migraines. No treatment was offered other than to remove the gallbladder but even the surgeon said it probably wouldn't solve the problem. .Since then, and because I am so afraid of sepsis, I have managed the pain and condition through a very extreme diet: no meat, no dairy, no processed foods of any kind, no processed sugar, no alcohol and no gluten free bread, biscuits or cakes - they Always set the pain offl! And this diet worked, I felt well. But the last 2 years have been very difficult - my husband diagnosed with cancer and he died in December 2020. Since his diagnosis, I started eating more convenience foods again and stress has been off the chart. I'm now back on my diet of vegetables, potatoes, quinoa, beans and pulses, almond or soya milk, oats and fruit but the pain is not going away. Any advice would be so appreciated - feel at the end of my tether to be honest. Many thanks.
