The reigning U.S. champion Nia Akins won a chaotic final in the women's 800m with a time of 1:57.36 at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials 2024. Defending women's 800m Olympic champion Athing Mu shockingly tripped and fell just seconds into the final and will miss out on the Paris Games.

Coaching error, this well-known problem of Mu was not addressed in her training. When she is training with others, runners will just slow up a tad and give her plenty of room because it’s the Queen. Mu thereby developed a bad habit of cutting in without giving enough room. That habit gets her in trouble in actual track meets.

She comes in expecting the other runners to make room for her. One did as they came down to lane 2, but whoever was in lane 1 kept rolling, and Mu kept moving in, bumped her arm and seemed surprised, lost gait for a split second, that’s all she wrote.

I’ve looked at this video many times to see if she was tripped by someone and it appears she spooked herself by looking left and trying to change lanes too quick? She didn’t anticipate this error on her end. Sad.

At least Athing initiated the problem that caused her to fall. It looks like she tried to shoulder bump her opponent. Maybe in her fatigue she just took an unstable step?

She knows how to avoid it to happen because she had the experience being an Olympic champion. And besides even if u fall down the challenge is there in how u stand up and be the best to win the race. U are an Olympian but ur fighting spirit was disabled after that fall.
