Tbh, this was a good ending for Paul, at this point he was dead, not physically, but mentally. Before he was fighting and trying to stay alive, but at this point, he isnt weaving or searching for cover like before, hes just running without the care to survive. And when he dies, he isnt sad, he isnt scared, hes at peace and thankful that it all ended.
If he survived, he would've never left the trenches, and eventually would probably have a kid that went off to fight another futile war

Do you all remember when they were just enrolling in the army and just got there “new” uniforms but they were actually those of dead soldiers and the woman in the background washing the blood out of the uniforms😢 this was such a sad movie.😢🥺😭
