The original opening is so cliche with just a dialogue from the protagonist.
This would have made the movie’s opening pretty awesome and unique. Not to mention how it tells of Ming’s strict character and nature without directly telling of her strict character and nature

Her dad appeared out of the blue… he’s a supernatural being and must be contained.

This is so bold and feels like classic Pixar too to me. But I see how it complicates involving the dad in a balanced portrait since the opening is about honor your parents, not just the main mother-daughter conflict. Maybe it was too Edward Yang for the rest of the high school focused story and felt disconnected. I still wish they didn't decide to cut it, it "feels" like a better opening IMO.

I feel like this really just gives the viewers the sense of the fact that her mother has high expectations for Mei to be perfect because she states that they have rehersed it and it seems like she's starting to look at Mei as a pet

And everybody has to agree youn Mei's voice is cute like for real

LOVE how it shows that ming is strict and expect high things out of mei mei but still is a caring and loving mother
