oh man. On that bend test, where's your safety guy? If either of the blades broke on the right bend, your host could have had multiple severe lacerations to his legs. Pulling would be way safer, and doing it from behind the protractor plate would be way smarter.

Love this show and love the Rapier, but man, in this one, the judges dropped the ball bigtime. At the beginning where they showcase what they want at 00:57 they show the rapiers successor, the small sword, easier to carry and lighter/shorter, but in my opinion, in every other way, a downgrade from the Rapier Espada Ropera as showcased at 00:34

At 07:29 you can clearly see the handguard of the blade. That IS NOT a Rapier and should have lead to a disqualification for not meeting parameters. It is not the right sword, he might as well have brougth a Katana versus a Sabre.

A proper Rapier at it's handguard (hilt) should have, depending on it's exact period any or up to all of the folowing:
1. between 2 and 4 fingerrings, of even size for the blade, some late ones could house 2 fingers par ring
2. quillions, for outstretched protection of the hand.
2.1 early design: one tilted upward or horizontal over the wrist in rest, the other horizontal/up or down stretching far over the knuckles in rest.
2.2 1/2/3 small ones or 1 short & wide one on the inside.
2.3 1/2/3 midsize to long quillions horizontal and at the end, upward, to lend extra protection over the outside of the hand.
3. a cuphilt or later via Germany a papenheimer to protect versus thrusts aimed at the fencing hand.
4. a knuckelbow, mostly wiered, not closed, altough some later, simpler mass produced models had a cupguard here with some knuckleguard akin to later Sabres.
5. some form of counterweight mostly worked into the guard or as a small pommel

The total weight of the blade should not be heavy, about 1 kg (2.2 pounds), for this is albeid being long, a finess blade for quick witted, sleight of hand duels, posibly to the death. These swords have very long blades for onhanders. Some are sharp on both sides for all her length, some are single edged, some one side full length sharp and near the tip, doublesided. To save weight and add strength/flexibility to the blade, many had a fuller. Some more exotic ones even had a flamberge design, for more cutting power.

Later in the show, I think season 7 they revisited the Rapier and there they clearly did better.
So as I said, fantastic show and it grew over the seasons to mostly ever better.

The one thing I worry about is when the flexibility of these swords. Bending left, had it broken, it would have been away from Dave. However, when testing it to the right, he stood in front. In the position had the blade snapped, it could have very easily done serious damage from the knee up to the sternum.

First of all, it is hard to believe from a Japanese perspective that the rapier was a functional weapon. In Japan, there was a long sword called a Ddaitō(大刀) that was operated with both hands, but it evolved into a shorter sword. Even so, the katana(刀) was a weapon that was operated with both hands, while the shorter Wakizashi(脇差) and Tantō(短刀) were weapons that were operated with one hand.

Early forged in fire showing that not everyone was sure of what to do. But afterwards just got smoother with each episode. But just a major feel bad since Rapiers are know as very light and fast weapons, yet both smiths struggled with the weight. They don't do it all the time, but there are times when there's a weight parameter. But that will also depend on how much research the smiths put into the weapons they are forging.

The show is called forged in fire. Not cut with a bandsaw and grind. A blacksmith forges with fire by HAND. For what Peter did is more fabrication then actual blacksmithing. If you don't have a forge. You can always do a coal forge. It's like when someone wants to forge something and they have challenges about scavenging steels from cars. Everyone goes for leaf strings. Take that out of the occasion and you will have a True blades smith. Even a fabricator can make a knife without fire by just cutting and grinding

So let me get this straight. One of the contestants makes rapiers for a living. The other contestant has no rapier experience and doesn't even have the equipment to make it.

This whole segment was off. The energy, the tone, the camera work the editing. Was this an A.I. mashup?
