Heat the mirror before polishing? When the mirror cools, the contraction of the different thicknesses of the metal should in theory have a slight impact on the polished surface.

Bronze cast into a mould (containing reliefs of the design desired) by the puddle-cast process might create stress within the metal due to the varying thickness and speed of cooling.

This could, when the flat side is polished and coated with mercury amalgam, result in variations in the intensity of reflected light following the thickness / stress.

This is probably an effect not desired in the most expensive astronomical mirrors, but that process might reveal more information by studying methods used to avoid 'imperfections'.
