Green Party Leader Annamie Paul is stepping down as leader following another electoral defeat and months of internal turmoil. Paul called her time as leader a “tremendous struggle” and acknowledged that the Greens were “not likely going to do well” in the election.

“I just don’t have the heart for it,” said Paul in a press conference on Monday morning, calling it the "worst period of my life."

Paul’s resignation comes after she finished fourth in her Toronto Centre riding behind Liberal incumbent Marci len, who had also defeated her in a 2020 byelection.

"When I was elected and put in this role, I was breaking a glass ceiling. What I didn't realize at the time is that I was breaking a glass ceiling that was going to fall on my head and leave a lot of shards of glass that I was going to have to crawl over throughout my time as a leader."

In winning the leadership bid in October 2020 with 54 per cent of the votes on the final ballot, Paul became the first Black Canadian and Jewish woman to head a federal party.

This is the most self-serving, buck-passing resignation speech I have EVER heard. It was also the worst period in the life of the Green Party of Canada.

Quite possibly the most unimpressive leadership of a federal party in Canadian history.

An actual leader would try to unite the party with their resignation not to blame and high light the in fighting. She may be an intelligent well versed person but she's repeatedly shown that she's not a leader.

Of course it's always someone else's fault 🙄

Is anyone really surprised? This is what happens when you pick candidates based on trying desperately to be so damn diverse rather than COMPETENT.

You ran in your own riding 3 times and won 0 times. Go cry a little.

The racial victim card, how original.

I've never been a Green Party supporter, but have been appalled by the level of vitriol and derisiveness displayed against Annamie Paul. Political leadership is a difficult and challenging role as it is without people castigating you in the most heartless and cruel fashion. Long live civility.

This is the most selfish resignation speech I have ever heard. Everything is always about her and never about the party.

I still want Annamie Paul in Politics today. I wish she didn't walk away so disheartened. It will not go down as a good memory in Canadian History. I want Annamie Paul in the Public spot in Politics. I will leave this out there in hopes she will one day re-visit this journey and path toward equity & justice.

She's a divisive woman, whose politics aren't what's needed right now. She may be a very good lawyer, but not a good leader.

Couple month too late. I'm so old I remember when the green party was about the environment, not BLM

Stop with the lies. She cries racism when her OWN riding refused to vote for her. That means black Canadians don’t even want this woman to represent their DT Toronto riding, never mind a federal party.

She did not come fourth in her riding because she is black, she came fourth because the people want nothing to do with her or her party.

Wouldn't be surprised if Canada's crazy aunt (Elizabeth May) tries to come back as leader.
