Meet the new Green Party Leader: Annamie Paul

Mercedes Stephenson interviews the new leader of the Green Party of Canada, human rights lawyer Annamie Paul. She is the first Black woman to permanently hold this position federally.

They talk the need for more diversity in Canadian politics, COVID-19 and the upcoming byelection in her riding.

Paul won the biggest leadership contest the Greens have ever had in Ottawa on Saturday evening on the eighth ballot with 12,090 votes in a race that saw 69 per cent of party members vote.

Nearly 35,000 people were eligible to vote, nearly 10 times as many as turned out for the last leadership election in 2006 when former party leader Elizabeth May won.
