Cause he’s the head of the family. That line oozes of resentment and anger. Fredo even pauses after saying it, as if he can’t believe he just uttered those words.

What a scene.
I can understand why it was left out. I think what followed would have been flagged to early on in the film but it tells you everything. The resentment, lack of self respect, fredo's knowledge of his own inadequacies and his wish to have a wife like kay.
Godfather 1 and 2 are brilliant.

I always wished we’d seen more of John Cazale, he played Fredo as the well-meaning but bumbling, privately envious brother magnificently. Brilliant actor as well as mentor and friend to Al Pacino.

A real man who respects himself would never tolerate dating, let alone marrying such a disrespectful, loud-mouthed, promiscuous woman. If that's how she treats him in public imagine how it is in private. Fredo is what every man should aspire not to be.

All 5 of the movies John Cazale were in were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Damn that's an achievement I doubt will ever be equalled.

Remarkable. This scene REALLY adds to understanding the backdrop for Fredo's mental state which lead to his downfall. On top of his being overshadowed by his brother's preeminence his own wife was cruelly dismissive, supercilious..

Fredo is such a brilliantly layered character in so many ways. In this era of reboots and backstories, that’s the character in The Godfather whose backstory needs to be told.

Marianna Hill is the name of the actor playing Deanna. She was my drama teacher back in the early 90's in London. Awesome, very passionate, sensual.

Great scene. In real life Marianna Hill, the actress playing Fredo's wife, is a quiet and spiritually oriented person. She's also a cousin of retired General Norman Schwartzkopf.

I'm the son in the middle of 2 highly accomplished daughters. I'm not as bright or as charming as my younger sister, or as brilliant and wealthy as my older sister.

But when my dad needs work doing in the garden I get the call. When my nan is on her way to hospital and my mam needs someone to get her stuff and take care of her place I get the call. When the next door neighbour was a prick to my mother I was the one that stopped my dad doing something stupid. I was also the one who was smart about it and made that neighbours life an absolute misery for the next 3 years. He knew it was me. But knowing it and proving it are 2 very separate things.

My sisters have made fantastic lives for themselves and have found fortune and success. We're all very proud.

But success is fleeting. Undying loyalty and unwavering love is worth far more. Having your parents be proud of you is wonderful. But having their trust and their faith is something to be proud of.

I used to resent the fact that they called on me to do things theyd never ask the girls to do. Then I realised that they just couldn't rely on them the way they could me.

Fredo fumbled his gun and froze when his father was shot. Im sure the guilt of that weighed heavily on his mind as somebody who can’t protect his own.

This shot proves Fredo never knew about the hit. He states that, if he were embarrassed in front of Michael, he would "never live it down." That demonstrates Fredo fully expected Michael to be around for a very long time.
