How to use SYNC to transition HUGE BPM Differences

The Sync button is pretty controversial, and you may have your own opinion on it. I myself have nothing agains’t it, but I do believe everyone should learn how to beat match manually.

Anyway. No matter what you think of the Sync button, there is no denying the fact, that it’s pretty useful and especially useful if you want to transition huge BPM differences.

So in this video I’m gonna teach you how to smoothly transition from low to high BPM’s and high to low bpms - like 90 to 130, and vice versa.

This transition technique works by setting the currently playing song as MASTER, and activating SYNC on the song you want to transition to.

Once you reach your transition point, which will be the outro of a song. You will then mix in the intro of the next song. But here’s the kicker. Once the songs are playing together you will then use the tempo fader of the master deck (which is set to the WIDE) to bring the BPM of both songs either higher or lower - depending on the next songs base bpm, you want to transition to.

And at the same time, you will then do the necessary mixing, such as bringing the volume up and EQing, to smoothly transition to the next song.

So the first step is this:

Set your tempo fader range to WIDE. To do that on Rekordbox DJ, just click this section here, and to do this on Serato, just click this section here.

Now for this example we’re going to transition from a low bpm to a high bpm. Later on, I’ll show you how to transition from a high bpm to a low bpm.

Anyway, the 2nd step is to load both your songs, which ideally have long intros and outros. And set the song you want to transition from as master, and activate sync on the song you want to transition to.

Now however you affect the bpm of the 1st song, the 2nd song will follow.

Third step is to play the first song, and wait for it’s outro section. While that is happening, make sure you next song is armed and ready to play once you reach that section. Keep in mind that the volume fader of the next song is all the way down,

So once the mix in section has been reached, the next step is to play the next song and slowly mix it in, all while bringing the tempo fader of the 1st song closer and closer to the next songs base BPM.

Please note that when you adjust the tempo fader, you do it as smoothly as you can, as to not disrupt the vibe of the dance floor.

It’s also important to note that having a long outro and intro for both songs is ideal, to give you more leeway to mix and transition.

Being an open-format Dj sync is a MUST. Mixing in a bar for 6 hours every weekend, a massive library, comfortable shoes, a positive attitude and THE SYNC button are the best companion.

This is exactly what sync feature was meant for. This transition would not have been possible on turntables. I have been DJ'ing for over 20 years and I still learn something new watching your tutorials. Keep it up. You rock.

Great tutorial, always on point!
No matter how you mix, the key is if you have the tools available, use them. No one really cares on the damcefloor. Great stuff!

personally I use an "1/2 way" increase /decrease. Gradually taking the 1st track from 90 to 110, while starting the the 2nd track at 110 and then bring it up to it's final 130

You should post a tutorial on how to make your own edited versions of the original songs to a personal edited/extended songs...

Gotta say, I love the sync button, cause I mix psytrance ranging from 142 - 160 bpm, and there's a lot going on within those bpm and in that genre, and when you use the main fx plus the fx pads at the same time, keeping up with beatmacthing along that is hard, I ain't no octopus ✌

I make a great habit of beat matching by ear, but the use of the SYNC button for drastic BPM/genre shifts is an excellent way to transition. Great video!

Great technique. Manual skills are important, but there's definitely no need to hold some kung-fu vendetta against the sync button. It's only a button. It can't hurt you.

Definitely a great thing to learn and accept the sync button as a friend for transitions. Learned how to make the fader 'wide' on serato by holding shift and keylock. Thank You Carlo!

Being a fresh beginner I'll be learning beat matching by ear ofc but I'll use that button for all it's worth later. Fantastic time saver!

i use transition tracks for this a lot but it’s good to do that manually from time to time (and a couple of my transition tracks include wordplays lol)

I only use the sync button if the BPM is on a 1-4 point difference. Anything significantly larger you have to be creative and know how to sync manually in a smooth way just how your video shows. Good stuff 👏🏼

I've been DJ'ing for over ten years now. Two years using just a laptop and Virtual DJ and the remaining eight using Traktor and a Kontrol S2. The DDJ 400 really had me considering changing over. Your thoughts?

Using sync is fine, so long as people respect and make the most of its advantages, like with techniques like this!
When I did my first dj gig I had nothing except traktor on a laptop and a portable mouse (no controller!) and the guys I was playing with were all on vinyl. I was very aware of the advantages I had, so made the most of it. So I made sure I was mixing harmonically, mixing fast, using effects and utilising all 4 decks - doing things which were impossible or at least difficult with turntables. If I had played a set which was no more technical than what the guys on turntables were spinning, then that would be lazy of me, I was aware of the advantages I had with sync so I used them! I since got a set of turn tables and 11 years on I’m about to get my first controller!
