In the 4th episode of The Football Files, we’re taking a look back at one of the most horrendous football related crimes ever committed. The murder of Andrés Escobar’s was about a young man, losing his life for an honest mistake. But it was also, and probably more so, about football getting stained with illegal money and a nation’s tumultuous war on drugs.

The pressure and mindset those players had to endure during that game. Death threats and kidnappings of family members. Incredibly sad.

I grew up in Africa, Nigeria to be more specific, and as kids whenever we were playing soccer and we scored an own goal, we called it an "escobar." I didn't know that until I heard of this incident. Such a sad story.

Even as an American warching that game the news of Andres death saddened me, I even wished Colombia had won.
Andres represented his nation honorably and with humility, i wish all our athletes had his character..

can't believe it's almost 30 years since his shooting... I remember sitting in front of the telly as a kid watching the Colombian games with the commentators highly praising the Colombian team as a dark horse and I couldn't understand why they underperformed with such a great squad. Hearing all those inside stories about death threats, kidnapping etc... I now fully understand... 😪

I've listened to this story multiple times in many different videos but you made a very good summary of them all, enough for most people to understand it in a complete way.

Very good summary of Andres death and the whole atmosphere in those days. l remember that right after the first half of the game against Romania started, it was relayed to the Colombian team that whoever scored a goal would receive 1 million USD, and whoever missed a goal would receive a bullet. So they came back into the field playing completely different, full of fear.

As a Colombian American I’m so glad Colombia is not like this anymore. It’s made almost a complete 180. Everytime i go to Colombia I actually feel really safe. Unfortunately now countries like Mexico are being overtaken by the cartels and its very dangerous to travel there.

So the country that wanted them to supposedly win so badly was the cause of their demise and mental collapse. In what universe did they think harassing, threatening and bullying the team would help them win?

Netflix need to make a documentary about this so the world knows about this team and what they had to endure and Escobar's life. So sad. God bless him.

Colombia was a wonderful team to watch back then; very creative and entertaining. It’s awful they had to play under the pall of death threats. I remember watching that game, and after seeing the own goal I was worried about Escobar. It was still a shock to learn about his subsequent death. Such a tragedy.

I’ll always remember hearing this story as a kid. Had me scared for every team I ever watched growing up.

I remember this being in our news in the UK. Such a tragedy and awful commentary on the malign influence of drugs on society. An innocent young man pays the price 😢
