I like the fact that the double “Amen” is used in the Douay-rheims NT instead of “truly, truly” or “verily, verily”

The Latin Vulgate is actually the only translation that is Pre-Schism. Making this the only English translation of the Holy Bible based on a manuscript accepted by the Church when it was united.

I just bought oxford press’ compact rsvce bible (i still love it) but the Douay Rheims is my absolute favorite translation and wish i had known there was a compact version of it. There is something so beautiful about the way the DR bible is written..it reads like poetry and is just so inspiring..

I think a major advantage that the DR has over other translations is its use of the you singular pronouns (thou and thee) and you plural pronouns (ye and you). The distinction aids the reader's comprehension and appreciation of the biblical text. For example, in Genesis, you can tell when God is speaking to Adam or to Eve or to both of them.

Lovely. As a protestant, I think the DR is a magnificent translation. I currently have the Saint Benedict Press edition. I'd be tempted by this edition if my eyes were younger!

I don’t own a DR Bible, and I’ve wanted to change that for awhile - this exact book was the one I narrowed it down to (but the black version). The translation is a super important part of our history being based off the vulgate, and it’s a more reverent and spiritual translation. For study, I prefer the RSVCE, it’s probably more precise and it’s easier to interpret, but for some “casual” reading I like the older translation, such as the one in the confraternity NT.

Now having the Baronious LOBVM, I can get behind their products being quality and I’m definitely thinking about adding this to my collection. I just worry about redundancy with my Oxford press “pocket” RSVCE Bible (the blue hardcover). But based off some of the extra resources in this, I think I can justify this purchase 😉thanks for another solid review.

The one I have is the black cover version. I think I was being a bit optimistic about my eyesight when I bought it (as I'm "of a certain age" now), but there's always +2.00 reading glasses, which I have and use for small print. It's an excellent Bible though.

This is my personal favorite translation, there’s something absolutely special about the Vulgate. It has a certain weight and historical authority to it that cannot be understated. Not to mention, it reads very similar to the king James version in the sense that retains its flowery and poetic language, while also being a much easier translation to comprehend and read. It’s a perfect balance between old Elizabethan English and modern language. For devotional reading, you really can’t beat the Douay Rheims.

I have the black cover one and I just love it. Opens flat, does not bleed when you use a Micron pen. Only the print could have been a wee bit darker for oldies like me.

Thank you for your video! I just purchased this bible, and your video helped me make my decision. The print is surprisingly easy to read considering the small font, and the paper doesn't feel overly fragile. I'm planning on having this as my travel bible once I have it rebound.

For a readable translation from the Vulgate, I prefer the Knox translation, as the English is more modern. As a small, pocket, Bible for use when travelling it is difficult to beat the RSV 2nd CE which is readily available, nicely bound and costs only about £10. It is always looking for Bibles in second hand shops - I recently found a beautiful pocket edition of the KJV, bound in leather, in absolutely original condition for £2. It does not have the Deuterocanonical books, of course (although some KJV Bibles do include these as what they call the “Apocrypha”) but it is a really beautiful Bible to own.

This little Bible is absolutely an everyday reference along with the Schuyler RSV with Apocrypha. I'm far too old to play with tiny Bibles, anyway, and this is a great little size.

Bishop Challoner revised the earlier Douai Rheims in light of the King James Bible. This has caused a lot of chronological confusion. The Bible you reviewed is the Bishop Challoner edition and not the original Douai Rheims version.
