Updated: Top Five Catholic Bibles

Top five videos are a complicated thing sometimes because as you acquire more bibles, it changes. It is impossible for me to express how much I appreciate what I am able to do.

While I am not Catholic, and I disagree with many of the Catholic beliefs, I do appreciate many of the ancient traditions. I also think sometimes as Protestants, we avoid certain practices to simply avoid looking Catholic rather than seeing the whats and whys of these practices. Here are my top five current catholic bibles.

For those of us that are not familiar with Catholic Bibles, this was an informative video. Thanks Tim.

Very, very fine review, sir. What's most telling is that you picked the venerable Douay-Rheims as your top choice. This is probably the most trustworthy translation of the bible for Catholics, since it does not incorporate any modernistic theories or liberalistic ideas. Its language was, more or less, "frozen" in time in the mid-18th (or mid-19th) century. The spelling of OT names differs, in some places, markedly from other English bibles, but that's because the D-R was translated from the Latin Vulgate. Far more reliable in its renderings than the NABRE or NRSV, oor even the RSV-2CE and the Jerusalem Bibles (original, New, and Revised New). Pairs well with the Knox translation.

I received the NRSV illustrated one near the end and absolutely adore it. It’s a Bible that feels personal to me and I’ve only had it a month. The gilding is beautiful, leather feels high quality and the illustrations were placed properly for context. Single column text is my go to as well.

Very interesting Pastor Tim. The Word on Fire looks amazing. I’m a bit disappointed though that the Gospels and the rest of the NT are separated. Thanks again. 😊🙏

Oh, you should get a copy of the RSV-2CE Great Adventure Catholic Bible! I just got my paperback today and it’s so nice! What more the Alpha Cowhide leatherlike? They don’t have it in genuine leather but it’s printed in Italy by LEGO. Its typesetting and features are superb! Anyway, check it out! Tim Wildsmith did a review thereof.

You should check out the Divine Mercy Bible by Ascension press, edited by Fr. Chris Alar.

NABRE, the acronym for New American Bible Revised Edition, is pronounced like ‘neighbor.’

Hi Tim. I am looking for a beautiful woman’s Holy Catholic Bible with readable font (not too small) and that is not missing any scripture.
I have created a small on line ladies daily devotional with fellow school mates which has been active now for 10 plus years. We have read “Bible in a year” for 3 of the years and devotionals. This year we are doing the Word Among Us which is a monthly little Catholic magazine with daily readings and daily meditations. Yesterday’s devotional scripture verses were from Zachariah 2:14–17. We discovered that these verses are not in most bibles, even Catholic ones. I did find, however these verses in the Blessed is She Holy Bible/journaling Bible (but the font is a bit small) and I found in the Catholic Teen Bible. I did not find the verses in the Great Adventure Bible nor the NRSV XL Catholic Addition (These bibles I have on my shelf). These verses that are not included in some bibles are so beautiful! It’s sad they ar not included. And then, I wonder why? So…that brings me to my first sentence: looking for a beautiful woman’s Bible that includes missing scripture with a bit larger font.
I reach out to you seeing that you enjoy collecting bibles and thought maybe you could help me find one.

We won't get through this in an afternoon. But here is my quick list.
DOUAY RHEIMS (1582/1610) Not perfect, but very beautiful reading.
JERUSALEM (1966) Legitimate option. But not my favorite.
REVISED STANDARD (1966 Catholic Ed.) ✝ Arguably the best. ✝
NEW AMERICAN (1970) Legitimate option. Just not my favorite.
NRSV (1989) Unreadable, and obnoxiously gender inclusive.
RSV 2nd Catholic Ed. (2006) 🏮 Surprisingly, beautifully done. 🏮

Hi Tim. I just discovered your channel and am definitely enjoying your reviews of Catholic Bibles. I'm curious, have you reviewed the Jerusalem Bible, 1966 edition? JRR Tolkien was one of the translators for that edition. Also, would you consider reviewing the Living the Word Catholic Women's Bible? Do you review bibles geared towards one gender? Thanks!

Can you review the Devine Mercy bible?

This... was a little strange review with all the descriptions of embossing, binding, ribbons, fonts, layout, illustration talk. I came for like what would be the best accuracy of the Hebrew & Greek translation into English. I picked up one tidbit on that the Douay-Rheims is a word for word translation by a committee.

The Douay-Rheims looks cool but the "Holy Bible" on the cover is too small and looks off centre.

Hello Tim, i was wondering if you have found a cheap alternative to the douay rheims 1582 and 1610 Old & new Testament?, i like the challoner but, I think Genesis chapter 1 needs the original old translation, and i want a nice bible bible for under 200$, and I stumbled upon the new Douai Rheims bible by Straightway Ministries non challoner edition, i really think they need to specifiy a non challoner edition, it is like they are neglecting the real word of God. 1 IN ᴛʜᴇ beginning GOD created heauen and earth. 2 And the earth was voide & vacant, and darkenes was vpon the face of the deapth: and the Spirite of God moued ouer the waters. 3 And God said: Be light made. And light was made. I would love a bible that has this pretty close, i was almost convinced that the Geneva bible was like this but then it had the same typeface as the KJV.
