Ultimate Modular Workbench: A Design for Everyone

I designed and built a fully modular workbench system that can work for any kind of workshop. Smaller carts can be rearranged and connected to maximize functionality depending on the project. Each cart has ample storage that can also be customized. The workbench is on wheels which makes it great for situations where it needs to be easily moved around such as a 2 car garage. This workbench system is not only perfect for woodworking, but also for other setups such a small business, hobby, serving tables, and more! Hopefully this workbench system can transform your workspace to be even more functional!

What kinds of projects would you use this workbench system for?

I'll be honest..I'm a old school guy..been wood working for 35 years now..I clicked on this to laugh at it..but I am humbled, , ..this youngster is a natural at shop work..so..in conclusion I gotta say, , I learned something new and improved also damn cool..I'm a stubborn old prick who was impressed with your work..well done mate..I am gonna build 4 of these tables...I'm also now subscribed to your channel...I absolutely hate to admit it..lol..but, , yeah, , pretty damn cool...👌..btw..I agree peg board is garbage in my opinion...I hang my tools on French cleats....

I think I’ve found the work bench I want to build! Now, what are these ‘feet and inches’ you speak of??? 😁🦘🇦🇺

These benches would be awesome for modular model railroad layouts! Awesome design!

This is such a great system. I was thinking of making similar carts for my miter saw and jobsite table saw so that I could slot either into a space depending on which I was using, but I had not considered making the entire work surface modular. What an awesome idea, and all of the storage solutions you demoed were really great use of space.

I have two workbenches in my very small shop (a converted 8'x16' carport) very similar to yours. They're identical and both on casters. Originally they we were open but I've since added a drawer unit and shelf to one, and a pullout shelf/tray to the other. I enclose both and added doors to keep dust out. They're the workhorses of my shop. I've also used them as trolly carts for lumber deliveries, and platforms for standing on to reach overhead storage items. As you so perfectly illustrate, the versatility of these kinds of workbenches is endless, and so useful. Thanks for the great video.

I like the idea of this so much. I think I now have a direction to go for my workspace in the coming year! I currently have a few various sizes and shapes of workbenches, but it seems like it'd be really nice to streamline them.

Make one shorter and mount my little contractor table saw on it so the top is flush with the normal height. Others can be ganged together as outfeed tables.

Set up one with my shop vac and dust separator on the bottom shelf.

Heck, maybe even a miter saw one with the saw set lower. Then I could gang together two or three as needed for long miter cut pieces!

Moving things around that often, I might have to look into a quicker-to-use method of joining them. Bolting would be great when they're going to be joined for awhile, but moving them around a bunch, it might get cumbersome.

Thanks for sharing this! Elegance in simplicity!

You're my hero! This is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for as I'm about to move into my first proper small unit and need worktops for prepping and packing products exactly as you've done in your final setup.

This was an idea I was fooling around with for a modular table saw table to fit under my existing workbench. Thanks for thinking and demonstrating much more in depth than I thought previously.

Thank you!! I needed a mobile, flexible workbench for my 2 car Garage while I demo the old massive one built into one wall. This is so perfect, I hadn't even thought about a modulear design, going to make 3 of these and finally turn my wall into French cleat storage!! Bravo! Earned a sub!

I really like the hole solution for connecting the benches. I've liked this style of modularity for a while(2x4 technology from Codename: Kids Next Door). Eye level racks could be added on the back using the holes for storage, tools or whatever.

This is what I have been looking for, and I didn't even know it. I will make some slight modifications, but this basic design is nearly perfect. Thanks!

I built very similar modular work benches. Instead of holes and bolts to attach them I used adjustable latch clamps. If you are going to be moving them around a lot this is very convenient. I like the bottom tray concept you used as mine only have a center shelf.

I just finished this building this workbench. I made the legs 28" long to accommodate my height and also so it will nest under my planned stationary workbench. I love it! Thank you for sharing your design.

And I forgot to say "Thanks" for the great design.

This was my first project in trying to set up a small shop in the basement.

AWESOME video instruction

Even got my stepson off the video game as he was curious...

Had him do ALL the assembly after I had all the pieces cut!

Fun how bonding woodworking can be!

Thanks again

love the french cleat organizer idea! Infinite options for storage bins, because you built all the bins for custom fit!

Love this! Thank you for sharing. I will be building one of these soon! I plan to use exterior construction screws for mine rather than drywall screws since it will be used in my garage where it could be exposed to outdoor conditions. Great idea about connecting tables!!

Well done! I just built three of these for my garage at our house in town. Used left over treated 2x4s from an old deck for a pool I had to take down. Little bit twisted, and took a few more minutes to square up compared to new wood. Now to build out some shelves in them and bolt two together for an “L” shaped bench and one for a work table. I did use 5/8” plywood and it’s very strong.

Bought your plans and will buy more!

WOW! Just bought your Modular Workbench Plans. What a great idea for a universal, re-configurable work bench system! Your plan is well executed and easy to understand. I needed a work bench and was struggling to find a plan that was easy to build and would serve multiple purposes. Your plan hit all the marks for me. $15 well spent. Thanks.
