Every job in the Navy carries tremendous importance for the success of the fleet. As an Officer, it will be your responsibility to ensure the mission is accomplished by making the tough decisions in coordinating and planning. As an Enlisted Sailor, you will be called upon to execute key functions that will determine the outcome of the task at hand.

I wouldn’t say “mentorship” from an officer. They have higher standards and are supposed to set an example, but only from afar. Officers aren’t approachable like that. Officers aren’t tasked with training, guiding, or disciplining directly. They are tasked with ensuring it’s done. They’re just not, nor are they supposed to be. Officers DO NOT, or are supposed to not, fraternize with enlisted. Ever. They have completely different career tracks, they never go to “boot camp” or wear chevrons, they have different responsibilities, pay, jobs, wear different uniforms, eat and sleep in separate facilities, and are prohibited from becoming personal, in any form, with enlisted. Rightfully so. Officers give orders to senior enlisted (Chief Petty Officers), who task Petty Officers with ensuring non-rates (E1-E3) make it happen. Chain of Command. And, the higher the officer, the less contact.

Chiefs and Petty Officers mentor. They guide, coach, lead, train, discipline, and even crack beers together with non-rates in ports, though, the higher the Petty Officer, the less so, theoretically.

Officers and enlisted are two completely different animals. Two trains running on parallel tracks.

USN enlisted 1991-1998 PO2.

USAF E-7 through E-9 now have the decision-making authorities warrant officers in sister services do as a matter of official policy-without the WO commission. That's why the USAF ended the WO program in the early 1970s...the last Air Force W4 retired in the late 1980''s.

After thinking about it for 42 years I've decided to enlist - I'd rather wear the Cracker Jack uniform than officer....

Don't you have to be a Chief to wear Khakis if you're enlisted?

You wear the same damn uniforms now. Navy is not what it once was unfortunately. MM3 (SS), USS Oklahoma City SSN 723, ‘90 - ‘96.
