ram: sure, easy to check for defects
gpu: sure, easy to check for defects
cpu: maybe, look for obvious defects
motherboard: hell no, too much work, not worth the savings
psu: only if it's from the manufacturer

I'm posting this on a PC built with open box parts from MicroCenter. I saved $60 on the Asus Maximus Hero XI motherboard, $10 on the Corsair Vengeance DDR4-3200 RAM, $80 on the Corsair AX-860 PSU and $100 on the EVGA RTX 2080 Super. I'm not having any issues with the 9900K PC, that I've had since November of 2019.

My last PC had an open box Asus Z-87-WS motherboard that I got for $90. It was a $325 motherboard. I flashed the bios and dropped a 4790K in it. It's still going strong in my living room. It also has an open box EVGA GTX 1080 Classified.

When Papa Deals comes out it reminds me of Dave Ramsey lol. I appreciate you both for getting my finances straight when I almost spend too much.

I bought a Acer monitor refurbished 5 years ago directly from Acer on Amazon and returned it because it was giving me a grey screen. I called Acer tech and told him what was going on and boy he was pissed. Not at me, but at the fact that the refurbished monitor was not repaired and tested before being for sale again. So it was a returned refurbished. He asked me if I wanted to get a replacement. I told him no. I can hear the discontent in his voice, but he told me "I cannot blame you". He knew that after that experience I wasn't interested in another Acer product. At least he understood and was honest with me. I do have to say he was one of the most nicest tech support I've ever dealt with.

I bought an open box X570 board from Newegg a few months back. System was unstable, it seemed related to RAM. Updated the BIOS and now it's perfect. Saved $50. Newegg openly states that they do test their open box items.

Amazons return policy is super easy and I've never had an issue with returning a product I either just didn't want anymore or was broke. But even still I completely agree. I'd rather spend a couple extra bucks and get something brand new

I treat open box and used pretty much the same, and have bought quite a few of them. I build every system on a bench and have gotten good enough at it that it typically only takes me 5-10 minutes to swap a mobo, so it's not a huge deal to me.

I will say that I'll only do open box if it's from an outfit with a return policy (Amazon, Newegg, ebay, etc), because I *have* gotten open box motherboards that have issues before. Tech is absolutely correct, that does happen.

The question is whether it's worth the hassle to you. For me it's not a big deal, but for most people it would probably be a huge PITA at the least.

the fact you just got straight to the point and basically told us don't buy open box for a component that's so important to the functions of all components. just forget the risk and headaches, buy new! Liked and sub'd very good clear video.

This is beautifully timed because I was just about to get an open box 5900x. I’ll continue to wait.

I'm watching you on an open box monitor which was a no brainier. I plugged it in and it worked. If it hadn't it would have been no big deal to return. I have no idea why it was an open box.

Bought an Asus b350 from newegg. It was bricked, the 30 bucks saved was not worth the hassle.

I've had a motherboard go bad last year and I'd rather have my teeth pulled than risk going through that again. The technicians at Microcenter couldn't get it to crash it was crashing on me nearly daily. I had to spend like two hundred dollars and time leaving my house in a pandemic to get it replaced. (I have asthma, it's a fucking nightmare.)

I just got an open box z370 and i5 9400f for $160. Everything is working fine, I absolutely love used/open box deals

Great advice here, thanks! People need to factor in how much their time is worth when calculating how much they've 'saved' as the alleged savings often involve more time spent, greater risk, or additional inconvenience. I also think open-box items often carry a shorter warranty period.

As you say, we can disagree and still be friends. I firmly believe that and is one reason why I watch your video's. Some things I agree with some I don't. That being said, I just will never agree with you about money. Just because someone purchases a computer and does so within a given budget. Doesn't mean they can't afford to purchase a computer because they can't afford what you think they should. Just because someone can't go up a measly $40 to the next thing or purchase a new item. Does not mean they shouldn't be purchasing a computer. Some people are more disciplined with there spending. There are hardline budgets that some can say, "This is my limit period, I will only purchase what is within this". Now if they purchase a PC or part on a very low end budget and are disappointed because it didn't do everything they wanted it or needed it to. Then that's totally different. I would be the first to say, if that's all your budget allowed and you're upset with how the new PC/part performs. Then you should have saved more or waited until your budget would allow for something better.

That aside, I'm with you, there are few open boxed components I would buy. However I have the privilege of that choice, not everyone does but still can afford a computer and I recognize that.
