On February 14, 2014, five Japanese women accompanied by two Japanese diving instructors from the Bali-based Yellow Scuba dive club, set out for a diving trip in Bali, Indonesia. They completed two dives that morning but failed to return after a third dive that afternoon while exploring mangroves on the northeast side of Nusa Lembongan Island.

A guy I worked with in 2000 disappeared SCUBA in Hawaii.
He had a rebreather, he was on a group dive. His dive partner was low on air, but he wanted to stay, and explore, and that was the last anyone saw of him.
His fin, and his BC washed up on shore in Japan.
He owned 3 homes, and all of them went into bank foreclosure, because there was no body, and his parents could not just take over the payments or title. They had to wait 8 years to declare him dead.

They say he was dragged away by a strong current that runs from Hawaii to Japan.

The narrator is my favorite part of these stories. I could listen to him talk all day.

The scariest part is going in a group but not all return

Divers don't use their arms move forward. They keep their arms to their sides and use their fins.

This was really unfortunate as in the Indonesia, many vendor like that boat's captain were pretty ignorance about safety and just go with the flow

I couldn’t imagine the horror if a fisherman caught the shark that bit/ate the woman’s head and found it in the stomach assuming that it did.

Why the last one got decapitated and her hands/foots were cut off?

And here I am, even hating putting my head under the shower. I almost drowned at age 7 when I was on holidays with my family and the friends of my parents. They had a daughter who was 10. I couldn't swim yet but she could. We were at the pool when another girl decided to push me into the deep end of the pool. I can still remember trying to dog paddle with my four limbs trying to get to the surface but wasn't moving an inch. Next thing I know, my friend jumped in and pulled me up to the surface. I've been afraid of putting my head under water ever since and I'm 54 now.

Despite many warnings, nusa penida is still claiming lives to this day. As a local, I don't recommend to visit Klungkung or Broken Beach on high tide. Crystal Bay is generally safe but idk about the diving, I'm not into it

I went to Nusa Penida once. So this is the tragic and haunted story about a diver that didn't make it alive as told by my local tour guide on that island. 😮
I have my curiosity to know more about this back then.
And today this story pop up on my feed.. woah😮

I have done several 100 dives in these waters, and yes it can be very tricky, but i have never heard or experienced a down-current that sucks you from the surface.
On top, Mangroves is a pretty shallow dive site, from where you can swim in a 90 degree angle to the current and hit calmer water. Even if you get sucked in between Penida and Ceningan, with proper fins you should be able to hit one of the bays (Crystal or Gamat), the calmer waters between Ceningan and Lemongan or the Toya at the Penida side.
The captain is for sure to blame, but i am not sure if the guides really did know the area and conditions well.
I have experienced storms out there, seeing people washed away in a rip within seconds though just being 20m away, and it can get wild, but a swim out of the rip and closer to the shore has always helped.
