I'm a CNA and noticed a patient's hand was swelling and turning purple. She was wearing her deceased husband's wedding band and her finger was swollen and could not get it off. I tried to remove the ring myself with soap and water, lubricant, and ice but nothing worked. I informed a nurse and she said she could remove it with a tourniquet. I was intrigued so I went with her and recorded the ring removal. It was a success and the patient kept her finger and didn't have to cut the ring off which was sentimental to her.

Fireman here. We use purpose made ring cutters. They are no where near as good as this technique. I'll be showing this in work.😊👍

I did this for my dad's wedding band, although I didn't know about this brilliant trick. He was dying in hospital and my mom wanted his ring. That was the first time it had ever been off his hand. They were married 51 years and my mom passed two years later. I haven't been the same since. 😢

I had a nurse remove a ring off of my finger like this. 💜

I did this in the ER. It really works better than cutting the ring off

This happened to me as well. I had a blood clott in my arm, causing it to swell and I couldn't remove my wedding ring. The nurse did the same thing for me and it worked.

Nurses rock!!!🤟🤟🤟

A CNA did this. When I was a CNA, the nurses would call me to move patients from one bed to another or just remove the transfer sheet because I could do it without hurting the patients. Especially those with broken hips. It just takes ingenuity and caring. This was awesome.

Works great. We used to use string in the ER but it was tedious to wrap it and keep it tight on the finger. This is much better

As a firefighter/paramedic I would be confronted by this sort of situation from time to time. I always kept a reel of dental floss in our trauma kit. You simply wrap the finger tightly starting as the tip and working to the ring. This will compress the finger and the ring will slide off over top of the silky floss and compressed finger. I’ve never had this method fail.

When I was a Nurse, I used to get the patient to elevate their hand above head-height for about ten minutes by either sitting beside a table and resting their arm on it in an upright position, or by suspending their arm from a drip-stand to drain the swelling, and then the ring could easily be removed.
