What is a ‘15-minute city’?

We can make city life more accessible, sustainable & enjoyable by creating “15-minute cities.” Ensuring that residents can meet all their needs within a short walk or bike ride will accelerate a green & just recovery.

This is a dystopian nightmare. I don’t want to be confined to a life within 15 minutes of my apartment. It’s a claustrophobic nightmare. I don’t want to spend more time in my home and immediate local area. Going around to different places (either by car or train/Tube/bus) each day is what makes my life worth living.

While this is a great concept, we would be better served if we just moved out of cities altogether as much as possible by individual circumstances. Remote working enables that for many, if not all, and blue-collar workers can also benefit from living in smaller communes when high-end consumers also relocate to these "exburbs"/small towns. Humans aren't meant to be packed into cities that are more like cages than anything.

One of the main benefit about cities is that they give people an opportunity to pick from a huge variety of jobs within a relatively accessible distance. So, we'll always need a good transportation network (though significantly streamlined v.s. today's mess) because a significant portion of the population will continue to keep commuting beyond walking distance even if they have access to all the necessities on foot.

Pls come to Singapore to see how a 15 min city work! I have been living in one since birth 40 years ago. A 15 min city in your suburban area is going to make your cities look less congested and create an illusion of more space.

It is my understanding that Europe is laid out in similar fashion. There are small suitable towns or villages that are sustainable and have all the services that are need by the residents. The towns are connected by roads. Similarly, the Town Center Concept that has been adopted nationwide are design for that purpose. The 15 Minute City concept can be more clearly understood considering what exist. Considering mimicry, related to - applying what exists and has evolved - and using that with current community norms as well as the impacts of this recent pandemic would be very beneficial. Also, I did not see or recall the impact on Schools and the need for children to develop social skills. Finally, I thought that in light of the 2020 Covid Experience great minds would come together to consider ways the Cities could operate in a pro active fashion in the event there are similar health events.
