Thank you for a great video. I have been out of work for a long time and mostly living off savings. There is anxiety watching the funs deplete. Every few months I go way off the budget, last month was one of those months. The questions you asked got me to thinking about re-evaluating my budget and priorities. Thanks again.

Frugality is a life style that my husband and I have always practiced. We never felt deprived, just blessed on finding ways to cut corners. Of course we were gifted 3 acres many years ago from my husband's father, so the outside work is a hobby for sure. We both also like to read and once in awhile get together with other retired folks for a breakfast or lunch out. We are fortunate in that our grown children live close by and get to socialize with them. We have one grand daughter eight years of age and she likes to come spend time with us and go in our above ground pool. We've had that pool for 33 years! My car is eighteen years old with only 78, 000 miles. Your videos are so uplifting. Especially love the ones of the French countryside...

Your content is excellent Jane, but I also want to commend Mike on his filming and editing. It makes your videos look very polished and professional and keeps the engagement factor high. You two make a great team.

Thanks for the much needed video!
We are debt free, great pension and nice savings account. We have been frugal all our life to the extreme sometimes. I have a 25 year old oven that needs to be replaced and I’m doing it this week! We have the cash and I’m buying a really nice one. What the heck are we saving all this money for if we can’t enjoy it! My dishwasher went out at Christmas and we paid cash for it with no worries. It’s hard to get out of the mindset that you can’t afford things or have some fun. I’m not living like that anymore, we are going to reap the benefits of 40 yrs of frugality now. Life is too short and we are not guaranteed tomorrow.

Jane, it's true that we all need a fun outlet. I found a couple of subsidized activities in my community for 55plus. There are interesting speakers, movie afternoons, exercise classes, and I look forward to them every week.

Thankyou Jane / Mike💖💙
In the last 4 years I’ve given up so much to save money, gym member ship, going out for a couple of drinks to socialize, french classes, Zumba classes the list gos on.
I’ve been ill as well so that doesn’t help.
So Iam keeping an eye out for something local I can go to that doesn’t cost a lot.
I doing my keep fit a home via internet so that’s ok as no driving to the gym and I love.gardening and dabel in a bit of water painting all at home.
I will look for another French langue class in September maybe that’s a small/ large step I need Xx

Thanks for this. Yesterday evening we made our final payment on our 7 year long, debt free journey. In order to do this we scraped every last penny from the lines in our budget. It was terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. But feeling a flat today because I know my summer holiday that i am looking forward to, I work in education, will be a tight one. This video has reminded me that it doesn't matter 😊

So true, Jane! You helped me realize that I have been neglecting my friends and my hobbies by not planning them in!

Thanks for addressing this and giving some normalcy to the “fear of missing out”. It can harpoon your budget and sink your frugal ship. You and Mike are a good team. Solo savers can struggle as we typically lack someone to keep us from jumping ship.

I put $100 for fun money in my monthly budget so I can do thing with friends like go to bingo once a month or out for lunch or coffee. I also belong to the seniors centre and go there twice a week. Yearly fee only $45. As a senior it is important to me to stay connected as it would be too easy to isolate myself

Husband and I have a €5000 budget for dancing per year. This covers weekly subs for dance clubs and festivals. Sidmouth Folk Festival cost (early bird price) £1236, full week all in pass. Today we are in Meneham, (Kerlouan) which is a gorgeous place on the coast, about 1 hour's drive from Huelgoat and danced at a Fest-Deiz for free. Met some nice people and practiced French. We save on so many other things to be able to do this.

Hi Jane, My answer to all three of your questions is no. I do think maintaining contact with my friends is priority and if necessary, budget wise, I'll work around it. Like everyone, there are times when I think it would be nice to be carefree moneywise, but it's usually just a fleeting thought. I then think that there are many people much worse off than myself and the feeling passes. Thank you for raising this topic Jane, which I'm sure resonates with many of us. 🤗

Your videos stand out to me because you are so reasonable. Your advice to budget fun is what makes budgeting possible for me. If I could never meet up with friends or pursue hobbies, I would be unhappy and probably give up. Most of my activities are lower cost or free and that allows us to save up for the occasional splurge. We’re focused on saving for our planned vacation next year so going to the beach for free this weekend beats seeing a movie for $50!
