Rope Cast In Resin Knife Scales Fail

I would like to try this again, but I think I'd need a vacuum chamber to pull the resin fully into the rope before putting it in the mold.
The effect was not as interesting as I thought it would be, but there are some definite possibilities here.

Nice learning experience. I love it when woodworkers post failed projects, it allows you to see the way they treat the problem.

The choice of music and the hints at the mistakes makes the start of this video really intriguing!

I always appreciate seeing a video in which you share what you learned about a project -- regardless of how it turned out. I'm trying to convince myself to make a "negative result" video right now, but I always worry that viewers would be disappointed. Anyway, I'm here to say I enjoy it!

There have been a couple of adventures that John has characterized as a "fail", but which I thought were pretty valuable. This is one of them.

I've done a lot of fiberglass work over the years, I'd suggest using a natural fiber(cotton, hemp, sisal ect) and dry it thoroughly before applying the resin. Use a small stick to push and pump the rope while wet to help force the resin into the fibers. Also line your form with wax paper or tin foil which will prevent the resin from soaking into the wood. Remember, there are no failures only ways to learn what not to do! It's amazing what can be learned from careful investigation of a failure. So much knowledge, so little time to learn. Love your videos, thanks

Only our failures, do we learn the most. Thanks for showing the failures. Try, and try again!

Thanks for sharing John! Even though this wasn't a success you learned from it, and we're kind enough to share that knowledge with us! Thanks!

Definitely all about the learning process, as you said. I'm afraid to many people aren't willing to try things like this; way better to try it and at least end up with some knowledge! Thanks for sharing anyway!

Thanks for this video. We learn so much more from mistakes than watching over produced "I'm the perfect craftsman" videos.

Thanks for sharing with us. Great to see the steps and material choices, even if it didn't turn out the way you had hoped.

Thats a whole lot of very good info. I wish technology today would be able to transmit not only sound and light but also- the effort, patience, frustration, satisfaction, curiosity and other feelings that one goes through, while experimenting on something new. Whether it’s a new idea, design or concept or technique, or etc. Or whatever the name is for the mixture of feelings, during that process, which that one constantly asks-will work or not?
Sir, thank you for spending your time and energy to tech us something new and cool.

In Australia we call that, "Stayin' power".

Well done for persevering and showing us the mistakes and results. Next time!

Entertaining and educational as always. As for the "failed" view point, you are in great company...Edison went through hundreds of failures on his way to learning how to make a light bulb. So we all look forward to success with your special twist on how-to projects and a great finished project. Happy Holidays. - Annie

As you said, this was not lost time but, rather, information gained... for us all, so 'thumbs up'.
Best Wishes, Brendan.

Great to hear the insights from the methods that didn't work. I'm curious to see what you're going to cast in the next iteration if there is one.

Nice video. I definitely think that more people should post fail video's . There is so much to learn from them. Thanks

John, this is a success rather than a fail. You learned what does work and what does not. Had you succeeded first, what would you have learned?

What I learned is a cool new scale medium that I had not even considered.

My thoughts on the use of rope would be to unravel the three main strands, soak two or all three into different paints or dyes. Re-ravel the three strands and tape or tie the ends to prevent unraveling.

Place the two lengths of rope closer together, make the form as original, pour epoxy, clamp and let dry.

Pretty darn neat idea. I like it.

Thanks for sharing and being willing to throw it out there. Best to you - Joe
