UPDATE - Second Memory Card is now affected, here's a follow up video

Seriously guys, my issue with the micro SD card slot not working properly has been resolved and you won't believe how stupid the fix was. I tried so many things, I went online, applied new Drivers, tried many things, in the end the dumbest of things work. I'd love to know if this method works for you?

This is the Micro SD that works for me

I'm a Steam Deck owner and have been put off getting the Ally because of the SD issue.. this gives me hope!

Based on my experience. High gb memory cards tend to stop working on the ally after downloading a game or app. I have a 128 gb and it works flawlessly. Any 512 gb or 1 tb cause the system to crash. Regardless of brand.

Faster rated cards generally heat more. Its combination of placement of sd card in relation to heat from the device and the heating from the card during reading and writing.

My card was a 512 GB Samsung Micro SD and the Ally made it unreadable 😞. Both the Ally and PC can’t read it

Why you are misinforming, the problem still persists, it is not solvable by software, only with a new version of the board or motherboard components

My result was the same as yours. I have 2 x 1 TB Sandisk Extreme cards that did the same thing as yours. They were slow to load and then just showed SDXC. The device would require a checkdisk after connecting to another USB-C / Thunderbolt port on a dock that is attached to the ROG Ally. When I inserted a 512 GB Samsung Evo Plus, it just worked.

I hate to say but watch out for this card to fail as well. Switching cards/brands worked for me for a little too but ultimately the same thing ended up happening again. And over the course of days the reader basically failed essentially entirely. I'm not going to speculate on what is causing the reader to fail, that's up for debate but what is probably happening is that for one reason or another the reader is failing and corrupting the SD card in the process. With my old unit I tried 4 different cards. I even tried putting a brand new SSD with a new install of windows, all original drivers and a brand new SD card out of the package, it wouldn't read. Went to Best buy, swapped it out and the new Ally read the new SD card the old one wouldn't read just fine. It was hard for me to admit, but it seems to be a hardware issue.

Had issues with my 512GB Samsung and a reformat fixed it. Booted up today and now it doesn't show up.

I aggree with it being picky, i had my rog ally for about 2 weeks, no issues but out of no where it just decided to divorce my sd chip, at first i freaked out and was like oh no. But the sd card works on my switch, dslr camera. Tablet, and go pro, so out of curiosity me thinking the actual sd card reader probably got fried. It didnt it reads PNY, Samsung, and SP micro sd cards. So imy theory is its just something software or something. Also that card that was in the rog ally is now on my switch and it has like 20 plus games that all run smooth. So it doesnt fry your chips. It just does something to them where if being put into a pc it wont detect. Just use a switch to reformat or a dslr camera it should let it work again. Not saying its a solve all problem but it might work 🙃

From the version that starts with R7 of the serial number shouldn't they have solved the problem of the burned SD cards? I've had an R8 for a week and a Samsung micro SD, for now it seems to work well... if so, how long after might it get ruined?

There's nothing new in this video. Other people have already made videos to show 512gb and less still work just fine. The issue is most 1TB card doesn't work.

One work around I've found is to take the card and format it using Mac OS in exFAT and then take it to another windows machine and then do again a full Format (not a quick format) and bring it back to ally. It works. I've tried it couple of times now. The placement of sd card reader in steam is a big design issue.

also ejected the micro sd properly dont just take it out that why most cards die because there not ejected from windows properly

The community has noticed the only cards that truly work after you get the bug is 32gb SDHC nothing above that or SDXC type works 😅after the bug
