Say you had a network with multiple areas, two non-backbone areas connected to a central backbone area. Consider the drawbacks and benefits to collapsing those areas into one.

For one, after collapsing them, the routers would have identical link state databases for all the prefixes in the environment, meaning that a change in the environment would have to be communicated everywhere — so the routers are going to have more overhead.

On the other hand, a single area would be simpler to configure and there'd never be a need for a virtual link. Anthony makes sure you know how to balance all the considerations, while exploring your OSPF knowledge.

I love this question. This is a problem question. In the real world management would be involved. The reason for this would be trust between IT and IT management. I have worked in IT 8 years and they would continue use band-aids in order move on from one system to another. In engineer principle this very sound but in practical it does not develop very well.

actually the OSPF topic is not part of CCEN (ICDN1) exam topics. RIP is the only dynamic routing protocol for this level.
