Dense canopy forests aren't necessarily a bad thing, but diverse forests are important. It's natural for trees to compete with eachother and when a tree loses the competition for sunlight they die and feed the soil. But ground cover does produce a lot of oxygen even more so than trees. Low vegetation is really important.
