Also, forests have less extreme climates than open pastures. Less frost, less heat. As for rain, the trees are also shelter for that.

Free range chicken often find shelter in trees when it's rained. It's amazing how little ppl know about farming. A better question is how do you deal with aerial predators like eagle, falcons?

People winter their chickens in corn shocks in zone 5 (down to-20°F) with no additional protection. Not often, but that was a grandpa's farm practice.

We live in Washington state and it’s mild winters here and moderate to a bit hot for a week or two for summers, so this would probably work for my region too 😎🤗
